The Entertainment Software Association’s revenue dropped by $10 million due to the cancellation of E3 2020 due to the coronavirus.

As axios reported, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) recorded a decline in sales of ten million US dollars in the past fiscal year due to the cancellation of E3 2020. With 40 million US dollars, the income was 25 percent below that of the previous year.

In addition to membership fees from its 30 members, which include Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, Tencent and Electronic Arts, among others, and fees for game ratings from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), the annual E3 represents a major source of income for the organization.

For the last time, the game fair was held in 2019 as usual and generated revenue of 17 million US dollars. The congress and conference costs for the whole year were then given as 12 million US dollars.

After E3 2020 was completely canceled due to the global corona pandemic, it returned as a purely digital event the following year. There was long hope that the games fair would make a comeback this year, until the on-site event and later also a digital edition were canceled. E3 is set to return as an on-site event in 2023.
