Hearthstone boss was the nicest person at Blizzard and everyone loved him - Now he's in real trouble with a new Marvel game

The mobile game Marvel Snap is currently in the closed beta phase and is scheduled to be released in 2022. The community criticized the in-game monetization. Now the former Hearthstone boss spoke out and announced improvement.

What game is it? Marvel Snap will be an online card game scheduled for release in 2022. The game is currently in closed beta. It will be free2play but will include in-game purchases.

Who is the game by? The game comes from developer Second Dinner. A prominent name within the team is developer Ben Brode.

Ben Brode is best known as Blizzard’s former Hearthstone boss and as such was very popular among players. However, he is currently facing criticism with the game Marvel Snap.

Why is the game criticized? Video game monetization is a hot topic in the gaming community in general. First of all, prizes in Marvel Snap are not well received by some users.

How does in-game monetization work? There are the so-called “Nexus Events”. These are limited in time. Players can invest real money and convert it to the game’s currency. The in-game currency can be used to buy special cards or avatars.

For example, there are two ultra-rare cards in a Nexus Event Pack. These are the Jane Foster Thor map and a Destroyer (this one is also available free-to-play). The player only has a 1.5% chance of receiving one of the two cards per spin. The alternative: Both cards can be bought for about 490 euros.

Another problem is that the normal in-game rewards consist only of in-game currency and resources for upgrading the already existing maps. However, you do not receive new cards as a normal reward.

What does the community say about this? in one reddit threat was about the high cost of some items in Marvel Snap. Entitled: “PSA: Any game that charges $450 for two skins before official launch isn’t worth your time”. User Tac0Destroyer provided a list of things players should buy with the money instead. Among other things, it contained a Playstation 5, the entire Heartstone Expansion, and even a donation to an animal shelter.

Many users comment negatively on the game:

  • savagedrago: “The appendix “Beta” has lost its meaning lately (there wasn’t much left anyway). Gone are the days when you bought a game and it was DONE.
  • TheNoetherian: “I don’t think the problem is the two skins… While they are insanely expensive, I don’t mind the existence of insanely expensive skins. I think the problem is that there is an exclusive card that you can only get by spending tons of money on the Nexus Event […] The pricing is absolutely insane. There’s no way for a competitive player to keep up with new map releases without spending hundreds of dollars every two weeks.”

Other users put the criticism into perspective, but agree:

  • “The thing is, we can still play for free, right? Lol just don’t spend money on the cheating Nexus events, they will almost certainly change them before the global launch. We experienced the same thing with Hearthstone’s reward track when it was first introduced.”

How did Ben Brode react to the criticism? The developer posted a Discord screenshot on Twitter on July 22 (via Twitter). He wrote in a statement: The launch of Marvel Snap in New Zealand and Australia included the system of monetization to be tested: Nexus Events.

The criticism of Nexus Events has not gone unnoticed by Brode. He wrote in English:

“It is clear that many of you are disappointed with Nexus Events and we hear you. We missed the target here. Internally we are having discussions about the next steps and how we can act on your feedback. We are here for the long term and focused on making a great game that is fair and that you will love. Stay tuned to hear more from us.”
