Xbox Series X: New icons inform about the playing status of a game

In the future, new icons on the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One dashboard will provide information about the playing status of a game.

New badges or symbols in your console’s dashboard will give you a better overview of the playing status of your games in the future.

Eden Marie from the Xbox Engineering Team shared the first images of the new feature, which Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings can test right now.

Basically, new icons in a game’s tile show you why you can’t currently launch it.

The reasons for this can be different:

  • The game was installed from disc, but the disc is not currently in the drive.
  • The game has left Xbox Game Pass and you no longer have a license to play it.
  • The game belongs to another user who is not currently signed in to your console or who has not registered your console as a home console.

The images below show the warnings for the games Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil Resistance (no disc in drive), Rain on Your Parade (no longer in Game Pass), and Steep (belongs to a different account).

The disc cache has been tracked for a year, as Eden Marie says. The tracking therefore does not survive a factory reset. So you have to reboot from the disc for the icon to appear.
