A modder managed to add a split-screen mode to Zelda Breath of the Wild, thanks to which we can play the game in couch co-op. But even if you don’t want to buy the mod, the material shown in the video just looks cool.

Breath of the Wild in couch co-op is really wild

It’s all about this: modders Kirbymimi created the co-op mode for Zelda: Breath of the Wild to breathe new life into the game. The modification makes it possible to make Hyrule unsafe with up to four links.

So you can infiltrate enemy camps, with one Link distracting the monsters while another Link traps them; or you bash a boss together; or you can just have fun and race your shields down a slope.

And this is what it looks like in action:

The possibilities are almost endless: The mod gives hope that Nintendo might add a co-op mode for Breath of the Wild itself or integrate it directly into Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Thanks to the many game mechanics and the dynamic game world, the titles are ideal for shared adventures.

Just think what multiple links could do with the properties of the Sheikah Stone. Even single links manage again and again to break BotW through its many interlocking systems.

There are still problems: The mod itself is already available, but the split-screen mode has not yet been integrated (a beta is coming on July 29th). That means if you want to use them right now, all links share one screen. In this way, they are sometimes difficult to see and control. To circumvent this problem, there is a button that teleports your guest link to the host link, as you probably already know from other co-op games. However, the better experience will surely come once the split screen is implemented.

The above video from the Waikuteru YouTube channel also mentions that there is a lot of lag when the links are too far apart. Since this is a project that is still in progress, there will certainly be various optimizations and improvements in the future.

The links currently share one screen, as you can see in the video:

Is that even legal? Of course, the mod is not just compatible with your Nintendo Switch. If you want to use them, you need either an emulator on the PC or a hacked console. In both cases, however, you could face trouble with Nintendo – this can go as far as blocking your online account. If that’s too sensitive, you’d better watch the funny videos that show the chaos caused by the mod.
