have US antitrust officers legal action filed against Mark Zuckerberg’s meta corporation. The reason for this is its planned Acquisition of VR provider Within Unlimitedwho is best known for the VR fitness app “Supernatural”.
The US antitrust authority led by Lina Khan accuses Meta of dominating the competition in the VR space and with another takeover too much power over the market to own. They would be able to dictate prices and make it difficult for competitors to enter the market.
Within Unlimited was first purchased in fall 2021 announced and is rumored to be cost $400 million. Meta had previously taken over the VR headset manufacturer Oculus, the VR app “Beat Saber” and other VR specialists.
Noisy Meta the lawsuit is unfounded and based on “ideology and speculation rather than facts”. In their eyes, the deal should actually be beneficial for all VR developers, especially in the fitness sector. Rather, they expect growth in the VR market and more innovations.
The antitrust authorities must now prove in court that the takeover poses a threat to competition. Otherwise, Meta is allowed to proceed as planned and acquire another VR manufacturer.
However, it is not the first time that the company has been criticized for its actions. CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg already had to to stand trial in US court over Facebook and its use of data. The renaming to Meta did little to change the tarnished reputation. Criticism of Zuckerberg’s course and plan for the “Metaverse” persists.
