Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Do I have to have played the predecessors?

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Do I have to have played the predecessors?

Most JRPGs require fans to plan a lot of time, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is no different. For the playing time of the main story alone you have to calculate a good 50 hours, if you also want to fulfill side tasks, you can add a lot of time.

Accordingly, new fans in particular should ask themselves whether their Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – or also Xenoblade Chronicles X for the extra dose of confusion, because despite the lack of numbering, it is a spiritual successor to the first part – must have played to understand the third part. We have the answer for you here.

You need to know that for the third part about Xenoblade Chronicles 1 & 2

The short answer to the question: Knowledge of the predecessors is an advantage, but not absolutely necessary.

While the Xenoblade games are closely related, each game in the series essentially tells its own self-contained story with new main characters. Here and there there are references or recurring characters, but you can enjoy the individual games even without prior knowledge.

Apart from that, Xenoblade Chronicles also brings the stories of parts 1 and 2 together, or tells the future of the two worlds. Anyone who knows the lore of the games will discover a lot more here.

If you don’t mind the slight spoilers for the third part, we have a few examples of references for you in the following paragraph:

There are references in the third part, for example the fight between the two huge machines (Keves versus Agnus) “above the clouds” right in the opening credits. This is reminiscent of the two titans from the intro of the first part. In addition, Noah wields a monado (sword of the gods), which connoisseurs already know something about. Likewise, memories of Klaus, the creator of the first world, are awakened. Nevertheless, you can follow the plot even without prior knowledge.
