The PS5 finally gets 1440p support two years after its release, catching up with the Xbox. We reveal how you can get the update before everyone else.

San Mateo, USA – The PS5 has been around since November 2020, so it’s been almost 2 years. Players have been complaining about the lack of important features for just as long. Sony is finally bringing an update that, among other things, brings 1440p support, which makes gamers with monitors particularly happy. Unfortunately not everyone is allowed to test the new firmware yet. But we’ll tell you how to become a chosen beta tester and which desired features will finally come to the PS5.

PS5: New firmware finally makes Sony console as good as Xbox – players have been waiting for this for 2 years

What PS5 players want: Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has supported various image formats and video outputs. Full HD, 4K, everything on board. What’s missing – and heavily criticized – is 1440p support. The pleas were answered as the PS5 finally supports 1400p resolution, also known as WQHD (Wide Quad High Definition).

Here’s why 1440p is so important:

  • 1440p/WQHD offers a significantly better resolution than Full HD
  • In pixel language that means: 2560×1440 compared to 1920×1080 – your eyes will thank you for the sharper, crisper image
  • WQHD is mostly found in monitors for gaming, since 4K monitors with a faster response time are likely to be far too expensive for most people
  • Many PS5 users already have a 1440p monitor on their console, but it only spits out FULL HD due to the lack of support
  • Competing console Xbox Series X already supports 1440p, so it’s time for PS5 to follow suit

Thanks to a gaming monitor, you have a drastically reduced response time (often 1 millisecond). So the picture comes faster from the PS5 to your screen. While large TVs advertise with 4k, they often take longer to implement the great picture. In the faster gaming mode, many of the optical delicacies lose their sharpness.

If you want to enjoy God of War Ragnarök in all its glory comfortably in front of the big TV, you will hardly miss 1400p. But if you have heated rounds in Modern Warfare 2 or want an advantage in Fortnite, you can celebrate WQHD support. Because every fraction of a second counts here. Competitive gamers in particular who want to get everything out of their PS5 and have a fast WQHD monitor should long for the new feature. In short: If you see the enemy first because of your faster screen/monitor, you shoot first.

6 new fetaures for PS5 in beta update

When is the update coming? So far, only beta testers can enjoy WHQD monitors on the PS5. All features of the update have been live since July 28, 2022 for a select group of players. But you can quickly become a beta tester at Sony yourself.

Sony has not revealed an exact date for the new firmware, which will bring 1440p support and the other updates. The official PlayStation Blog on July 28 just says “however, our goal is to make these updates available to our global community later this year“.

These features are still to come: Along with the much-anticipated 1440p support, Sony announced other features that will enrich the PS5:

  • playlists: Easily create lists in the library so you can find games faster. For example, a list for shooters with CoD and Fortnite or extra for party games. You can create up to 15 such categories, with up to 100 titles.
  • 3D audio and stereo audio to compare: How do you like the sound of your favorite game better? With the new update you can comfortably listen to them side by side.
  • Access to ongoing activities is simplified: If the console was in idle mode or you switch diligently between games or Netflix and Co, you can return to certain activities more clearly and quickly
  • Screen sharing of party members: Your friends can easily see what you are doing.
  • social features: New functions then allow, for example, sending leaks / voice messages to the game base or joining a party member’s game directly

So players can still look forward to the update in 2022. The innovations, such as WQHD support, may come in the next firmware title update. Traditionally, users don’t have to wait too long for the beta tests to be implemented.

Become a beta tester for the PS5 yourself and have new updates earlier

Here’s how to test new firmware before everyone else: If you are now thinking: “I also want to test the newest, cool features for PS5”, you are in luck. You can easily register for it with Sony. The only catch is that you are randomly selected from a pool of other beta testers.

Once registered, you are permanently in the win. With a bit of luck you can test 1440p on the PS5 yourself. In the future, this will give you the chance to try out other features before everyone else.
