Drones: Volkswagen presents high-flyers for four people

from Claus Ludewig
Volkswagen Group China has presented a prototype of a vertical take-off drone. Four passengers can take a seat in the V.MO and fly electrically to their destination.

In the summer months, the holiday destination calls ever louder, but by the time you drive to the airport or train station, a traffic jam often strains the patience of travelers. In such situations, not a few people have dreamed of simply boarding a flying object and being able to fly over the traffic jam. Volkswagen in China has now presented such a solution as a prototype. In the V.MO is a vertical take-off drone with room for four people.

Test flights with the VW drone until 2023

According to the VW Group, the concept is based on current solutions for autonomous driving and relies on a drive battery. However, with a length of 11.2 meters and a wingspan of 10.6 meters, the V.MO is significantly more expansive than, for example, a VW Passat. Eight rotors take care of vertical take-off, while two rotors are dedicated to propulsion. Volkswagen intends to carry out the first flight tests in China as early as this year, before test flights are to be completed by late summer 2023. In its final version, the drone should be able to transport four passengers plus luggage up to 200 kilometers per battery charge. If it’s up to Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China, then this drone should become a premium product for customers in China and initially transport VIPs.

It is still unclear whether such a drone will also be offered outside of China. In any case, VW would like to respond to the special needs of Chinese customers and position itself there as a premium brand. In China, indoor space is commonly considered very important, such as this Audi Urbansphere Concept from the VW Group shows; a city car with an exterior length of 5.40 meters that was specially developed for China. The Middle Kingdom is an important sales market for Europe’s largest car company, with Audi aiming to become more of a luxury brand and VW a kind of premium brand.
