Amazon will discontinue its Amazon Drive cloud offering in the future. The magazine reports The Verge. Already in 2023 the cloud service will be terminated, both in the free and paid versions.
The shutdown will take place in several stages. That’s how it will be from January 31, 2023 no longer be able to upload files to Amazon Drive. From the October 31, 2023 the Amazon Drive app will then be discontinued. The complete offer should then disappear by the end of 2023, with users at least a year and a half have to back up their files.
What happens to photos and videos?
The reason for the setting is the decision to focus more on the app Amazon Photos to concentrate. You can still upload and save your own photos and videos here, as the application is not affected by the Amazon Drive shutdown. Prime members get at Amazon Photos unlimited storage space for photos and 5 GB of video storage space.
Amazon says, “We will continue to offer our customers the ability to securely back up, share, and organize photos and videos with Amazon Photos.” However, all files that are not images or videos must be downloaded by the end of 2023. On the official FAQ page recommends Amazon, for this the Amazon Photos desktop app to use.
Amazon Drive alternatives
Alternatively, the files can also be moved to other cloud services. For example, there is Dropbox, Apple’s iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Microsoft Onedrive. Most of them are chargeable, in the case of Microsoft you also need Microsoft 365 for more storage space.
