Sony cancels exclusive PS5 feature: Soon there will be no more awards for being nice

The PlayStation 5 got a new feature for the release that was supposed to make multiplayer games more enjoyable. You can use the award system to positively rate other players who you find particularly helpful or behave positively. Too bad that hardly any players use this feature.

Accordingly, Sony now has on the PlayStation website announced that the feature will soon be deprecated.

Award system is hardly used

As a reason for saying goodbye to the award system, Sony states that they expected more participation and would prefer to tackle other projects in the future instead:

In Fall 2022, the awards feature will no longer be supported on PlayStation 5. The feature hasn’t been used to the degree we promised, so we want to focus our efforts elsewhere. We encourage our community to continue sending positive messages to each other.

Although there is no exact date when the feature will no longer be supported, we can expect the end within the next three months. At least Sony is not only deleting functions, but is also working on new improvements. This also currently includes support for 1440p screens and playlists, which while only available in beta at the moment, should be expecting us later this year.

Sony wants to ensure more engagement

In the last Quarterly Financial Report Sony has stated that PS4 and PS5 gamers played on their consoles a whopping 15% less compared to the same quarter last year. Accordingly, one wants to take measures to bind players more to the Sony consoles again – possibly one of the reasons why the hardly used award system is being abandoned.

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Stars loyalty program, which is scheduled to launch later this year, could be more effective here. This should then make it possible to earn loyalty points, for example by gambling or earning trophies, which can be exchanged for PSN credit.

Have you used the awards system on PS5 and did you even know it was there?
