Before RTX 4000 and RX 7000: What resolution do you mostly play in?

from Thilo Bayer
Also in 2022, PCGH would like to know from its readers in which resolution they normally play. This is important for our upcoming graphics card tests with RTX 4000 and RX 7000. As always, we thank you for participating.

We regularly ask PCGH readers which graphics card they use and which features are important in gaming monitors. As a result, the development of the hardware landscape can be reliably traced and we can tailor practical and benchmark articles to the most common models. For 2022 we recently a survey started according to the amount of pixels used in games. With ultrawidescreen, 8K UHD-2 and other formats, the classic overview of resolutions has been expanded again. There are now many formats.

What resolution should it be?

Downsampling with the driver solutions DSR (Nvidia) and VSR (AMD) is still an issue, and the resolution can often be scaled even in modern games. Nvidia (DLSS), AMD (FidelityFX Super Resolution) and soon Intel (XeSS) offer further techniques to play in non-native monitor resolution. Normally, however, you should select the native resolution of the monitor in the quick poll. However, if you almost always play with DSR or VSR, for example downscaled from Ultra to Full HD, please coordinate with the render/downsampling resolution. With DLSS, NIS, FSR, RSR and Co., the output format should be selected.

The survey determines, among other things, in which resolutions we test graphics cards or games. For example, these are currently 1,920 × 1,080, 2,560 × 1,440, 3,440 × 1,440 and 3,840 × 2,160, but there are also other display types. While the 16:10 format is no longer widespread, 21:9 or 32:10 is more often used as a “cinema format”. And with Geforce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000, powerful graphics cards are still around the corner, which are probably able to handle higher resolutions.

Our 2021 survey showed that Full HD and WQHD scores went down, while 3440 x 1440 (UWQHD) and 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) numbers went up. In 2021, 2,560 x 1,400 was still by far the most used resolution – that could change in 2022.

2020 2021 change
1920×1080 24.0% 15.9% -33.75%
2560×1440 43.3% 40.9% -5.54%
3440×1440 10.2% 15.2% +49.02%
3840×2160 12.6% 14.8% +17.46%

As always, we send a big thank you for participating in the Quickpoll – They help to make our work a little better and, above all, more tailor-made for our readers.
