MultiVersus apparently already has more than 5 million players

When one thinks of successful fighting games, there is usually no way around Nintendo’s cult brawler Super Smash Brothers. But now it could have competition: According to publicly visible leaderboards, the Free2Play game MultiVersus already has several million players.

More than five million players

Since the party brawler released in open beta on July 26th, MultiVersus has climbed to the top of the Steam charts, beating out the likes of Team Fortress 2 and ARK. With almost 150,000 simultaneously active players on the most successful day, the Free2Play brawler has already made history. The title is also very popular on Playstation and Xbox. However, neither publisher Warner Brothers nor developer Player First Games have released official figures for the game. However, you can see in the leaderboards that most likely more than five million players have already tried their hand at the fighting arena. For example, Morgan Park from PCGamer writes that one of his friends has played 29 matches so far and is now ranked 4,929,968 in the global leaderboards.

That means at least that many players should have played the game already. It is not known to what extent duplicate accounts, test accounts and developer accounts are counted. The hype surrounding the party brawler is likely to be fueled again in the next few days: Because Warner Brothers wants to organize a big tournament at EVO 2022 with huge prize money.

What is the reason for the success?

There are several reasons for the success of MultiVersus: On the one hand, the party brawler appeals to a fairly large audience, as you can play with numerous well-known figures from pop culture.

Big brands from Warner Brothers like Superman, Rick & Morty, Game of Thrones or the Looney Toons know an incredible number of people. And then being able to fight with said characters in good, old Smash Brothers manner does the rest.

Another important factor for the success of the game is likely to be its availability: you can play together on PC, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One. In addition, the game is free. So even if you’re not completely convinced, you’re not taking any risks. Just download and try it out, many players will think. And the success speaks for itself.
