Northgard: New Steam record thanks to free weekend

from Sarah Petzold
Five years after its original release, the RTS game Northgard has set a new player record on Steam. The reason for the sudden onslaught of new fans was a free weekend on Steam, including a discount campaign that is still ongoing.

The RTS game Northgard currently proves that even games that are many years old can boost their number of players with a free weekend on Steam. Its official Steam release was more than five years ago (March 7th, 2018), but the title doesn’t seem to have lost any of its fascination, which is probably due to the ongoing support of the developers for their game.

More than 20,000 players online at the same time

Because while the team at Shiro Games, who are currently developing Dune: Spice Wars, has repeatedly released new playable clans as DLCs, the developers announced a new expansion for Northgard on June 12, 2022 to delight fans with an additional campaign. Almost a month and a half later, a free weekend was added to Steam and new players were given a 75 percent discount on the original purchase price.

Player counts subsequently hit a new record high of 20,235 concurrent users on Sunday, July 31, 2022. That’s almost 5,000 players up from the previous peak of 15,592 players on April 13, 2020, when Northgard previously offered a free weekend for free was playable.

Northgard is currently available on Steam until August 7th, 2022 for just under 7 euros – a deal that is definitely worth it for fans of real-time strategy in a Viking setting. The expansion called “Cross of Vidar” is scheduled to appear in winter 2022 and will tell a new story: After fighting Hvedrung, we must travel to a foreign land to prevent Ragnarök. However, the developers have not yet revealed any further details.
