The PS5 lacks an official Pro Controller. A new patent from Sony is said to reveal the better gamepad for PlayStation.

Tokyo – It is not unusual that large hardware developers such as Nintendo or Sony regularly go to the patent office to have new hardware, developments or concepts legally protected. When such concepts reach the public, they sometimes allow interesting insights into what is being worked on in the development departments of the companies. Now a new patent from Sony has surfaced that could hint at a PS5 Pro Controller.

PS5 Pro Controller: Sony’s new patent could be a clue

Why is? English-language website Metro.co.uk reported that Tokyo-based Sony has filed a patent for a new gamepad that features new and improved analog sticks. Like the triggers on the PS5’s DualSense controller, these analog sticks could then provide haptic feedback and provide an improved gaming experience. Such a change would make sense since the DualSense controller already uses feedback in different games. If the analog sticks would also give this feedback, the concept would have been further developed.

What does the patent drawing show? On the patent drawing, so-called “non-Newtonian liquids” are contained in the analog stick. This refers to liquids that change their viscosity when subjected to a force. That would create resistance. The best example of this would be pudding or some kind of gum. The drawing also shows that the analog sticks could be retracted into the housing of the DualSense controller.

When the sticks are depressed in this way, resistance can occur and provide the desired haptic feedback in the sticks. So far, the sticks of the PS5 controller can only be clicked, but with a stepless resistance in the sticks, even more functions would certainly be possible.

PS5 Pro Controller Coming? Unfortunately, this cannot be said unequivocally on the basis of a patent application. More and more manufacturers are launching higher-quality controllers for e-athletes or enthusiasts. Be it the Pro Controller of the Nintendo Switch or the Xbox Elite Controller with interchangeable sticks.

It may well be that Sony will also release a “DualSense Pro” in the near future, which corresponds to the controller for which the Tokyo-based company has applied for a patent. Industry insider Tom Henderson published the first details about a PS5 Pro Controller back in June. Henderson is well-informed and credible in the industry. According to Henderson, the PS5 Pro Controller should have some new features, but most importantly it should have improved analog sticks on board that are interchangeable.

This information fits very well with the patent, which now actually showed improved analog sticks. There have also been rumors for some time that Sony could launch a PS5 Slim in 2023. So fans may not have to wait that long for an announcement about new hardware and a PS5 Pro controller.
