Krafton (PUBG, Tera) is working on a fantasy RPG with an exciting setting
Does Krafton Inc. tell you anything? The South Korean holding company was formed in 2018 to henceforth serve as the parent company for Bluehole and its associated subsidiaries. Meanwhile, you may be familiar with Bluehole thanks to the online role-playing game Tera or the battle royale hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). With The Callisto Protocol, another exciting game with strong Dead Space vibes will be released under the Krafton publisher banner this year.
Dark fantasy RPG with an exciting setting
As early as 2021, those responsible at Krafton had announced that they wanted to expand the world of the well-known Korean fantasy novel “The Bird That Drinks Tears” into a multimedia franchise (source). For this they had teamed up with the concept artist Iain McCaig (Star Wars, The Avengers, Harry Potter, Terminator). Among other things, his work should serve as the basis for the development of a game in the universe of “The Bird That Drinks Tears”.
Then followed recently official announcement: The development of a fantasy RPG (so far untitled) based on “The Bird That Drinks Tears” has officially started. In fact, there is already one website for the game as well as some chic concept drawings that give an outlook on the exciting setting:

Similar to the League of Legends MMO or Star Wars Eclipse by Quantic Dream The executives at Krafton also hope to be able to recruit reinforcements for the development team through an early announcement in order to “to realize an ambitious vision“.
The Bird That Drinks Tears
As previously written, The Bird That Drinks Tears is a novel series written by Yeong-do Lee, the pioneer of the Korean fantasy genre. Lee is considered one of Korea’s most widely read fantasy authors, whose books have sold millions of copies to date. Above all, the sophisticated world and its complex characters are praised. Instead of elves, magic and dragons, Korean concepts such as Dokkaebi, Sirum and the Arajit language (based on Proto-Korean).
The Dokkaebi are one of four intelligent races that inhabit the world of the novel series. The quartet is complemented by the humans, Naga and Lekon. Each race worships its own god, which in turn represents its own element that it controls. In addition, the gods have given their respective peoples a gift. For example, Dekkaebi can control fire. Naga priests, on the other hand, are able to commune with the goddess of water.
According to Krafton, the goal is “Bringing the fantasy universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears to life through its unique and refreshing fantasy races, beautiful haunting landscapes, and captivating, immersive and poignant stories.” If we succeed, a great RPG could await us. We’ll keep you posted.
