Bear and Breakfast put to the test: when the animals rented out the forest

Bear and Breakfest looks small and tranquil, and with its cute graphics and cute animations it has melted almost every gamer’s heart in our editorial office. Cute looks aren’t enough, though, and some design choices left us questioning. At the same time, looking at some unfinished elements, we always got the feeling that this is more of an Early Access title at its core. Nevertheless, over the course of our playtime, the tranquil building sim has grown on us, not only because it looks very cute, but also because of its surprisingly impressive scope and complexity.

Unsurprisingly, in Bear and Breakfest we play a bear who takes charge of a boarding house. In our tranquil world, which is limited to a small, deserted valley, we make it our mission to attract tourists and take the money out of their pockets. Well, we don’t think of it ourselves, but a dodgy, inflatable shark with a speaker box wins over our naive bear alter ego for his cheap holiday resort chain.

The prospect of people bringing prosperity and life to the valley inspires the rest of the animal world, also because it is boring – a very understandable basic premise.

After a short time we have several guesthouses available and on our way to becoming a hotel chain manager we meet some interesting and above all lovable characters. From the rat mafia, who is very happy about the incoming garbage from people, to cheeky forest dwellers and a few cranky people, everything is there. Action and dialogues are sometimes very funny and mostly charming. However, some conversations feel irrelevant and repetitive – but then you can just skip them.

Although you meet most of the characters again and again, at some points we ask ourselves why an exciting personality doesn’t appear for long stretches.

Ultimately, almost all characters are interesting and often have motivations that our character doesn’t necessarily understand in his naive willingness to help, but we as players see through at least some of them.

In theory, the storyline of Bear and Breakfest could be seen as an accompaniment to the hotel building and management mechanics, but it’s too complex and tied to our progression for that. In addition, it continues to unfold over time and offers an amazing amount of depth and long-term motivation, which is extremely beneficial to the title and enriches the concept.

Completely without opposable thumbs

The main focus is still somewhere else, after all, the guests do not come to the valley on their own. We start very modestly with the first pension and build rooms that, equipped with very simple beds, offer sufficient comfort to the frugal newcomers. Comfort, in this case, is one of the fundamental values ​​that we must look to in the future, coupled with decoration.
