Sony is redeeming gamers with a massive supply of consoles. According to new forecasts, it should be much easier to buy the PS5 by Christmas.

Hamburg – Buying the Sony PS5 turned out to be a kind of full-time job for some and completely impossible for others. Anyone who wanted to get a replenishment drop for the coveted console really shouldn’t have fallen on their heads. All of that is set to change now, however, because Sony announced to investors on its last earnings call that it wanted to increase production or availability of the PlayStation 5 by the Christmas season.

Buy PS5: Sony wants to ship 18 million consoles in fiscal year 2022

Is it getting easier to buy a PS5? One can assume that from now on it will be easier and easier to buy a Sony PS5. Sony plans to ship a staggering 18 million units of the PlayStation 5 throughout fiscal 2022 (fiscal year April 2022 to March 2023). Just for comparison: So far only 21.7 million units of the console have been sold worldwide, of which only 2.4 million in the first quarter of 2022. In order to meet its own targets, Sony would have to sell a mere 15.6 million consoles in this fiscal year.

For gamers, Sony’s optimistic PS5 predictions are more than good news. The console rain should primarily affect this year’s Christmas business. Another tussle for a few available PS5 consoles by the end of the year could just be a reminder of the past.

Why is Sony PS5 availability improving? The main reason for the PS5 console shortage has been the ongoing semiconductor crisis. But the supply chains for the PlayStation 5 also stumbled massively due to the global corona pandemic. Recently, for example, a week-long lockdown in the port city of Shanghai made the Sony PS5 less available. However, these problems now seem to have been overcome, as Sony writes in its current financial report:

(…) since we are seeing a recovery from the impact of the lockdown in Shanghai and a significant improvement in the supply of components, we are working to bring forward more supply into the year-end holiday selling season.

(…) As we see a recovery from the impact of the lockdown in Shanghai and a significant improvement in component supply chains, we are working to advance better supply availability for the holiday season at the end of the year.

For players who have been waiting for their Sony PS5 for almost two years, there should be a happy ending no later than “Black Friday” week, the start of the American holiday season. Until then, we’ll also provide you with all the information you need to buy a PlayStation 5. If you don’t want to miss a console drop, then it’s best to check our constantly updated PS5 ticker.
