Game culture: Pac-Man – live-action adaptation planned

The insatiable Pac-Man is undoubtedly one of the most iconic characters in video game history. So it may come as a surprise that he hasn’t gotten his own movie yet. But that should change now.

For 42 years now, the yellow circle with the big mouth and the equally big hunger has been up to mischief to teach mostly cute spirits to fear. Beyond the games, there have been two TV series in the past, among others. But now Bandai Namco’s mascot is to have its own cinematic monument.

Will Pac-Man Movie Like Sonic The Hedgehog?

Pac-Man only made it onto the big screen in the form of a prominent guest appearance in 2015’s Pixels, starring Adam Sandler. Commercially, the title flopped and it also fell completely through the critics. But that was certainly not due to Pac-Man himself and like the US industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter now reportedone wants to promote a live-action film adaptation in the dream factory.

However, there are still no details about the plot and cast, and there is also no director yet. It is also completely open how the concept is to be implemented. That someone slips into a Pac-Man costume can be doubted. A hybrid such as Master Detective Pikachu or Sonic The Hedgehog is therefore conceivable – i.e. a fully computer-animated character in a real setting.

Original idea for Pac-Man

The idea for the film came from Chuck Williams, who brought the first Sonic film on the way and will also act as a producer for Pac-Man. According to the report, it should be an original story. A release date does not currently exist.

It will certainly be a few more years before the Pac-Man film adaptation will see the light of day on the big screen or on TV at home. If you want to wallow in nostalgic memories until then, you can check out Jens’ Pac-Man special.
