iOS 16: Battery percentage display returns to the status bar

from Rhonda Bachman
In 2017, Apple eliminated a popular iOS feature. The battery level was no longer displayed as a percentage in the status bar. Now this feature is likely to return with iOS 16, as the latest beta of the operating system shows. However, the feature is apparently not available for all supported devices.

In June, Apple introduced the latest update to the iPhone family’s operating system. iOS 16 will bring some new features, such as a new lock screen that users can place widgets on. With the new version of the operating system, however, a function is also coming back that Apple had actually discontinued in 2017.

Battery indicator comes back to the status bar

As the fifth beta of the upcoming iOS 16 proves, the battery percentage indicator returns to the iPhone status bar. Previously, users always had to swipe to the control center to see the battery level in a percentage display. Instead, only a schematic display made itself comfortable in the status bar.

This feature was already available on the iPhone. However, with the iPhone X in 2017, the percentage display option was removed from iOS. With the Notch and Face ID at the top, middle edge of the smartphone, there was no longer any room for this status display for a long time.

However, users can bring the display back with iOS 16. To do this, the “Battery” item must be accessed in the settings and the “Battery charge in percent” option selected. For some users, however, the function would already be activated by default. The battery icon should be able to change color depending on the status of the battery and the color of the iPhone wallpaper. For example, if the battery is being charged, the green battery icon should indicate the charging process.

However, the function should not be available for all supported phones. The battery percentage cannot be displayed on the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 11 and iPhone XR. A lack of space or the display quality may be a reason. There are also three older smartphones that cannot even install iOS 16. The iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, and the original iPhone SE will lose software support.
