New Forspoken clip is unintentionally funny and fans make fun of it with memes

Die Welt von Forspoken könnt ihr nun erst im Oktober erkunden.

That's probably not how Frey imagined it.

Forspoken still has an image problem. Publisher Square Enix would like all PlayStation fans to look forward to the action RPG, but the first impressions have left no hype, but conflict – even in the GamePro preview. In addition, there are various shifts, the accusation of a clichéd protagonist and several trailers, which are nice to look at, but so far convey little depth. Now, with a new gameplay teaser for the game, fans are having a good time – but not in the way Square might have envisioned.

It’s all about this: Video games are still a very young art form, and even if technology blows our hats off at times, there is no unanimity in the industry when it comes to story, dialogue and characters. One point of contention is the monologues of main characters, as you might think Horizon Forbidden West knows. Aloy chatters away to herself throughout the game, as if she knows we’re witnessing her adventures. However, Frey, the protagonist of Forspoken, takes it to the extreme in a new teaser:

Frey got the tone wrong: At first glance, the tweet is not that special. We see some gameplay clips accompanied by the protagonist as narrator. But this is where the problems begin, because breaking through the fourth wall, i.e. addressing us directly, needs to be done skillfully, but in this case it is not.

What exactly do fans find so absurd about the video? First of all, Frey’s way of speaking is supposed to look particularly “cool”, but that’s exactly why it’s not. Phrases like “So let me get this straight” and “Yeah okay that’s something I do now!” (Yeah okay, so that’s something I’m doing now) seem very contrived.

Second, the things the protagonist is so wondering about – an unknown location, dragons (or monsters in general), a talking bracelet (actually inanimate objects that can talk), and magic – aren’t anything special to video game endings. In fact, these aspects appear in a number of games in one way or another. This is exactly what many fans on Twitter use as an opportunity to amuse themselves with funny parodies about the teaser.

Here is a selection of creative retweets:

More Forspoken news:

After several postponements, Forspoken will be released exclusively for the PS5 on January 23, 2023. So Square Enix still has half a year to work on the game. The dialogues and figures should have been written and dubbed a long time ago.

Let’s hope that the impression from the teaser is deceptive and that the game writers around Amy Hennig (formerly responsible for Uncharted at Naughty Dog, among other things) have more in-depth stories and dialogues in store.

How do you like the dialogues and characters in Forspoken so far?
