Sonic Frontiers is scheduled to be released later this year. There are currently no plans for a possible postponement.
Recently, postponements of long-awaited titles have caused great disillusionment among gaming fans. The most recent example is Hogwarts Legacy, which was supposed to be released in 2022, but has now been given a new release date of February 10, 2033.
In Sonic Frontiers, however, the situation is a little different. As a result of the first released gameplay scenes, fans demanded a postponement of the title for quality reasons. SEGA rejected the proposal and promised a release later this year.
In announcing Sega Sammy’s quarterly results, Senior Executive Vice President Koichi Fukazawa and Executive Vice President Makoto Takahashi confirmed that these plans remain unchanged:
“We are currently not thinking of postponing the launch. In communicating with users, we intend to reflect the parts that allow for this within the development timeline and build empathy with users.”
“The Sonic IP is a mainstay where we will focus on long-term sales in the future and will continue to strengthen it beyond the next financial year.”
Sega Sammy has high expectations of Sonic Frontiers and is hoping for good sales figures, especially due to the good performance of the cinema film Sonic the Hedgehog 2:
“The previous film increased recurring sales of Sonic titles and also had a positive impact on Sonic’s licensing business after the film’s release.”
“We expect the same effect from the film, which has been a bigger hit than the previous one, and while we aim to expand the reach of Sonic IP, we want to see positive results for the new title as well.”
Sonic Frontiers is in development for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. An official release date could potentially be unveiled during Gamescom 2022’s Opening Night Live.
