Top 8 Games – The best games with a brilliant rating
Thanks to PS Plus you will find many games that you can play for free. Our Top 8 shows you the games that rightly have an ingenious rating.
Hamburg – Buying video games and owning them permanently is out, subscription services and game passes are the hot new shit now. Sony jumped on the trend this year and launched the new PS Plus subscription model in June. With PS Plus Extra (and the higher Premium tier), subscribers now have ongoing access to tons of games. But only a few of them can really call themselves masterpieces. Only eight games in PS Plus Extra have a Metacritic rating of 90 or higher, here we show you what they are.
What is Metacritic anyway? Metacritic is a website that compiles average ratings for new games, series, and movies. The platform takes reviews and ratings from all websites registered there and calculates an average with a score from 0 to 100. So if you want to see at a glance whether a newly released game is any good, you can do it very easily there. Pretty much every game in the PS Plus Extra library has its own score on Metacritic.
PS Plus Extra: Top Rated Subscription Games – The Best Fight on PS4
Mortal Kombat 11: Mortal Kombat has always stood for hair-raisingly brutal fatalities and controversies, but behind the bloody facade hides a series of at least competent beating games that have belonged to the absolute premier class in their genre since the tenth part at the latest. With Mortal Kombat 11, Netherrealm has delivered its strongest release yet, with tons of content, an easy-to-learn combat system, and a surprisingly entertaining story. Mortal Kombat Ultimate Edition got a straight 90 on Metacritic.

Shadow of the Colossus Remake: In 2017, Bluepoint Games brought a remake of the iconic Shadow of the Colossus to PS4, rescuing Fumito Ueda’s masterpiece from its drab existence on the old PlayStation 2. The original game is still complete with all its quirks, but Bluepoint Games has it all Corners and ends polished to a state of absolute flawlessness. Whether you played Shadow of the Colossus more than ten years ago or not, the journey to the forbidden land is always worthwhile in this remake.

- Meta Score: 91
Celest: 2018’s jump ‘n’ run Celeste has a certain reputation for being a real tough nut to crack. That’s not entirely wrong either, Maddy Thorson created a pixel game from an idea of a game jam that demands a lot of skill from its players. But Celeste also shines with clever level design, fair challenges and above all a lot of heart. Critics loved the journey to the top of Celeste Mountain and awarded the game a 91 meta score.

Demon’s Souls Remake: In 2009, From Software laid the foundation for a completely new type of role-playing game with Demon’s Souls. More than 10 years later, the dark and hard-ass game would return to the limelight once again thanks to a remake of the original appearing as a launch title for the PS5. Lovingly remastered, Demon’s Souls looks absurdly beautiful and plays as good as ever. After Shadow of the Colossus, the developers at Bluepoint Games have proven themselves to be true masters of their trade with this remake at the latest.

PS Plus Extra: Top Rated Subscription Games – Horror and Treasure Hunt
Bloodborne: There’s not much more that can be said about Bloodborne that hasn’t already been said. From Software’s role-playing game already had a place in our list of 15 must-plays for PS Plus Extra and Premium, and with good reason. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s studio took their Souls formula and turned it on its head in Bloodborne. Even faster, more aggressive combat, a morbid Victorian setting and cosmic horror from the top cabin make the game a real critics’ and fans’ favourite. Only one PS5 upgrade for 60 FPS is missing until today.
- Genre: Action RPG
- release: March 24, 2015
- Meta Score: 92
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End: All good things must come to an end, including the story of Nathan Drake. The treasure hunter and eternal paragon of ludonarrative dissonance embarked on his final adventure to date in 2016’s Uncharted 4. But it had it all and gave the fans the longest story in the series, consistently improved gameplay and one crazy action set after the other. Whether Uncharted 4 is the best part of the series is debatable to this day, but it’s definitely one of the best games on the PS4.

God of War: Kratos and his “BOY” are all the hype again right now, as God of War Ragnarök is due out in November. But if you have to catch up on the story before then, you still have plenty of opportunity thanks to PS Plus Extra. In 2018, the last God of War hit like a bomb and won “Game of the Year” awards in a continuous run. The action game shot up to the top of Metacritic right from the release and achieved a score of 94. Such a rating even drove Director Cory Barlog tears in my eyes

PS Plus Extra: Top Rated Subscription Games – An outlaw reigns supreme
Red Dead Redemption 2: Only a few exceptional games ever achieve a rating of over 95 on Metacritic. Rockstar Games has overcome this gigantic hurdle with not just one, but with eight different games. The last of these, Red Dead Redemption 2, sits at an insane 97 average today, and you can play it to your heart’s content thanks to PS Plus Extra. The Wild West epic about outlaw Arthur Morgan and the demise of Dutch van der Linde’s gang is only available in the subscription service until the end of September, so you should get on your horse as soon as possible.

Sony has been busy swapping out what’s available in the games library for a short time after the launch of PS Plus Extra and Premium. It is possible that other masterpieces from the PS4 and PS5 will also find their way into the subscription, but a few titles from the “90+” club are still missing from the offer. Which ones would you like to see subscribed to next?
