The coming graphics card generation from AMD and Nvidia is already casting its shadow, in all probability they will have a higher power consumption than the current generation. With MSI, the first manufacturer has now released two ATX 3.0 power supplies with PCIe 5.0 specification. The MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 and the MEG Ai1000P PCIE5, which have an output power of 1300 W and 1000 W respectively. It must be noted that the ATX 3.0 graphics card connections according to PCIe 5.0 have to deliver significantly more power for a short time in order to be able to withstand peak loads.

The PCIe 5.0 connectors of the “12VHPWR” type have 12 + 4 pins and can each supply graphics cards with a power consumption of up to 600 watts. An Nvidia Geforce RTX 3090 Ti currently has a power consumption of 450 W. Intel’s specifications stipulate that for a short time of up to 100 µs the power consumption by the graphics card can be exceeded threefold, so instead of 600 W up to 1800 W can be requested without the power supply switching off and the computer crashing. In the press release, MSI announces that their two power supplies can meet and exceed these specifications, so that at a time of 100 ms up to 1560 W and at 100 µs even 2600 W can be delivered briefly.

Both power supplies each have a PCIe 5.0 connector and all modern safety features: overcurrent protection (OCP), overvoltage protection (OVP), overpower protection (OPP), overtemperature protection (OTP), short circuit protection (SCP) and undervoltage protection (UVP). They will be certified according to 80 Plus Platinum and have a fully modular design, so that all cables can be unplugged directly from the power supply if required.

MSI is not yet providing any information on prices and availability, but the product pages for the two power supplies are already available and linked under this news.
