WoW WotLK Classic: Blizzard brings more modern retail mechanics to the old raids

More and more “retail” is leaking into World of Warcraft: Classic. Also with Wrath of the Lich King, some raid mechanics come into the “old” game.

“Wrath of the Lich King Classic” will soon be celebrating its release, but by no means all the mechanics from back then come into play unchanged. One of the biggest changes concerns the dungeon finder, which will not exist in the form it was then. But Blizzard is also changing some important things about raids, which are mainly inspired by modern “Retail” WoW because they have proven themselves here.

What exactly is changing? Above all, three major changes will be introduced in WotLK Classic, which did not exist at the time.

  • Ensuring Buff Fairness: In the original Wrath of the Lich King, it was possible to build up buffs and buffs in one spec, then switch specs thanks to “Dual Specc” and keep some of the powerful effects from the other spec. This was considered a bug even then and will now be removed. When you switch specs, buffs that logically couldn’t be in the group will disappear (or be massively mitigated).
  • Long Cooldown Reset: In modern World of Warcraft, after a boss fight – such as a wipe – the particularly long cooldowns are reset so that you can start the next attempt at full strength. This will carry over into Wrath of the Lich King Classic. When you die, almost all abilities with a cooldown of more than 2 minutes will have their cooldown reset. Some exceptions to this are Reincarnation, Ritual of Damnation, Astral Recall, or Lay on of Hands.
  • Fatigue after rage: If a character was affected by rage or heroism, then they have a debuff afterwards, preventing them from benefiting from the effect again for a while. This is to prevent characters from simply being revived multiple times in battle to benefit from multiple rage effects in a row.

Why is Blizzard doing this? The main reason for changing cooldowns is negative past experiences. Some bosses require that as many cooldowns as possible be ready in order to start a meaningful attempt. Even then, it led to frustration and fatigue when you had to take a forced break of several minutes after an attempt before the next attempt was due. Since this can happen dozens of times on a raid night, Blizzard wanted to change that.

The abolition of buffs by specializations that are currently inactive was already a bug at the time and could not be fixed that easily. The fact that this error is eliminated promptly this time also only seems to make sense.

What do you think of these adjustments? Good and useful? Or annoying retail stuff that’s totally unnecessary?
