According to a document submitted to the Brazilian competition authority, the Xbox One achieved less than half the sales of the PlayStation 4 in its lifetime.

At the start of fiscal 2016, Microsoft changed its strategy and decided to stop reporting console sales numbers and instead report Xbox Live numbers. Although it is well known that the sales of the Xbox One are well behind those of the PlayStation 4, there were no official figures to prove this.

As part of the debate between Microsoft and SONY over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which has already revealed some interesting details, documents submitted to the Brazilian competition authority now shed some light on Xbox One sales. Microsoft says the following in the documents:

“Sony has outperformed Microsoft in terms of console sales and install base, having sold more than twice as much as Xbox over the last generation.”

With Sony no longer releasing PlayStation 4 sales figures, the console’s lifetime sales are at the 117.2 million units sold announced in March. Xbox One sales should therefore be at most 58.5 million units. In mid-2020, the market research institute Ampere Analysis Xbox One installed base estimated at 51 million.

With the current generation of consoles, Microsoft was able to catch up a bit. According to Ampere, a total of 17 million PlayStation 5s were sold in 2021, which is about 1.6 times the sales performance of the Xbox Series X|S. In addition, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the company has been the market leader among next-gen consoles in North America for three consecutive quarters.
