Buy PS5: Amazon now lets you order by invitation, even without a Prime subscription

Scalpers and bots ensure that the PS5 usually sells out fairly quickly.

Scalpers and bots ensure that the PS5 usually sells out fairly quickly.

A few weeks ago, the online retailer Amazon announced its plan to no longer sell the PlayStation 5 freely in the future, but instead to introduce an invitation-based ordering system. This is to prevent scalpers and bots from buying up the available consoles within minutes and then offering them elsewhere at overpriced prices.

Today the new process started on the German Amazon site and from now on you can request invitations to buy the PlayStation 5.

Here’s how invites work for PS5 consoles

There is currently an offer on Amazon for the PlayStation 5 Bundle with Horizon Forbidden West. If you want the console, instead of just clicking “buy,” you’ll need to request an invite to purchase it on the right side of the page. However, this does not mean that you have bought the console, but rather it is an expression of interest.

If Amazon has new consoles in stock, new invitations to purchase will be sent to interested parties. These invitations are each valid for 72 hours, during which you can decide whether you want to hit a console or not. Unlike previous Amazon PS5 sales, there are no special stipulations:

  • It is no prime membership necessary, only one Amazon account
  • There is no cost to invite and you don’t have to decide to buy the console

You can use Request an invitation to be put on a list with which Amazon will offer you the PS5 for purchase if it is available.

So far only in a bundle: Currently, the invites only apply to the PS5 bundle with Horizon Forbidden West. For the regular PS5 and the digital edition, you do not have the option to request an invite. We’ve asked you if this will change in the future and will update this article accordingly if we get an answer.

More PS5 news:

Is the offer still worth it? If you wanted to play the new Horizon anyway, or simply don’t have the time or inclination to hunt for PS5, the bundle can still be worthwhile for you. If you don’t want to deal with scalpers and bots, it can also be worth looking at local electronics retailers such as Saturn or Conrad. More and more PS5 consoles are also available here for a long time.

What do you think of invite-based orders? Too complicated or finally less stressful?
