New Lord of the Rings game in progress – from the game studio at WETA!
The Lord of the Rings and Weta Workshop: a magical combination! After all, Weta is behind the grandiose film props, special effects and merchandise for Tolkien’s world, among other things. There has been a gaming division since 2014 that is now said to be working on a Lord of the Rings game.
While the Lord of the Rings brand is still an absolute behemoth, things have been looking bleak for a number of years when it comes to games set in Tolkien’s world. A bright spot were the two games Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, in which you could compete with orcs in an action-packed manner, but apart from that? Daedalic’s Gollum game has only just been postponed, so there’s nothing for Tolkien fans to gamble on for now. But it’s bubbling on the horizon: Weta Workshop’s gaming division is working on a Lord of the Rings game!
Weta Workshop and Lord of the Rings – a long relationship
In cooperation with the publisher Private Division, Weta Workshop Interactive (the gaming division of the special effects specialists founded in 2014) is developing a new game set in Middle-earth. Weta Workshop is particularly known for the fantastic film props in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They now work primarily on visual effects for Marvel films such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Thor: Love & Thunder. “Middle-earth Enterprises has licensed the literary works in the series, giving Wētā Workshop the widest creative freedom to interpret the books’ underlying lore.” states the official press release from Private Division.
Are you a Lord of the Rings fan? Then you shouldn’t miss out on these offers!
Lord of the Rings game by Weta: title and genre still unknown
While there is still no name, genre or release date (apart from a rough fiscal year 2024) for this game, Amie Wolken, the head of Weta Workshop Interactive, is enthusiastic: “It’s a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that’s so different from what fans have played before. We’re fans ourselves and look forward to players bringing Middle-earth to a explore in ways they’ve never done before, and that we can introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.” What kind of game in the Lord of the Rings cosmos do you wish for? A Roleplay? More strategy again? An action adventure? Share your wishes with other fans of Tolkien’s world in the comments section!
