WoW: As of today, new rules for boosting advertising apply

Starting today, World of Warcraft has new rules when it comes to boosting. We’ll tell you what’s changing.

Patch 9.2.7 went live in World of Warcraft today. That should have been the last update of the “Shadowlands era”, after which the pre-patch of Dragonflight (10.0) is expected. Still, Blizzard brought some interesting changes with patch 9.2.7. One of them concerns the controversial boosting groups, for which new rules now apply.

What is boosting?
Boosting is when an experienced player (or multiple) guides other players through difficult content and earns them slightly tough boss kills or high ranks in PvP. Players are then “boosted” to a feat they could not achieve on their own. While this is considered controversial, boosting against in-game currency (like gold) is allowed in World of Warcraft.

What has been changed? As of today, Patch 9.2.7 includes the new “Trade (Services)” chat channel, which is intended for just such boosting offers. Along with this come a few changes to the rules for World of Warcraft.

As of today, advertising boosting offers outside of the designated channel is no longer permitted and is henceforth considered “spam”. Corresponding messages can be reported with a right click and can then lead to bans if there are too many violations – either just for the chat or even for the entire account in the case of repeat offenders.

Boosting has always been controversial in World of Warcraft. That probably won’t change with the new rules.

What if you don’t want to see that? All general chat channels and thus also the “Trade (Services)” can be hidden by right-clicking on the chat tab and then under “Settings”. It is also possible to use the chat command “/leave [Kanalnummer]’ to leave permanently and return only when necessary.

The result should be that players will be far less bothered by boosting offers and the trade channel will finally serve its original purpose – namely to celebrate adolescent puns and [Donnerzorn, gesegnete Klinge des Windsuchers] to link.

What is forbidden? In the meantime, Blizzard has issued a whole series of bans when it comes to advertising such services. They may now only be offered in the channel intended for them and also only on the realm on which you want to offer these services. Offering services across multiple realms with many alternate characters is prohibited, as is creating “group finder groups” that explicitly advertise boosts. All of these violations can be reported.

Apart from that, the offering and implementation of any boosting offers is of course still prohibited if real money is involved. Anyone who pays for such services with real money or demands money for them risks a hefty account ban of several months or even complete closure of the account in the case of repeat offenders.

What do you think of this new regulation? Good thing or totally “meh”?
