TSMC prepares 3nm manufacturing processes for Apple’s M2 Pro processor

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC plans to start producing 3nm chips towards the end of 2022. Apple’s M2 Pro is said to be the first processor to be manufactured using the 3 nm manufacturing process. Other chip manufacturers also want to introduce the 3 nm manufacturing process next year.

As Taiwan’s Commercial Times (via MacRumors) reported, TSMC is preparing to produce 3nm chips. Originally, experts expected that the Taiwanese company would postpone the start of production, but now it should start towards the end of the year. Apple will be the first company to take advantage of the new manufacturing process in the M2 Pro. Other chip manufacturers such as Intel, Qualcomm and MediaTek only want to introduce the new manufacturing process in the second half of next year.

Will the chips be ready in time for the new MacBook Pro?

After the introduction of the M2 chip, experts expect Apple to introduce further variants of the processor later this year. Including the M2 Pro, M2 Max and possibly even an M2 Extreme, reports 9to5Mac. The M2 Pro and M2 Max could be used in the new 14- and 16-inch variants of the MacBook Pro. The Mac mini and the new Mac Pro could also have the more powerful versions of the M2 chip, believes Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.

According to recent reports, Apple will probably hold a second fall event in October, which will focus on new iPads and Macs. However, it is questionable whether TSMC has already provided Apple with enough chips by then. The MacBooks and Macs with M2 Pro or M2 Max, which the Californians will be showing at the October event, may therefore not be available immediately after the presentation, but will only come onto the market over the course of the next year.
