Netflix: Your own productions in an ad-financed subscription level ad-free?

from Maximilian Hohm
The upcoming advertising-financed Netflix subscription could at least temporarily exclude films and series produced by Netflix itself from advertising. In addition, the children’s program should also remain free of advertising. After a while, however, their own productions should also be equipped with advertising. Read more about this below.

From 2023, Netflix would like to offer a subscription model that will undercut the price of the previous entry-level offer and be counter-financed with advertising. This cannot be skipped and must then be viewed by the customer. However, according to reports from Bloomberg, it could be the case that Netflix does not apply the same standards to all films and series and provides its own productions and children’s series with less advertising. According to the report, own productions should be available without advertising on release and only be equipped with spots after a certain period of time, which then stays.

Netflix doesn’t want to allow downloads for ad-supported subscriptions (rumour)

The reason for this seems to be that many filmmakers are critical of advertising in their works and fear consequences from viewers if they are overwhelmed with advertising. The Netflix Originals children’s program should also remain ad-free in the low-cost subscription level and thus be similar to Disney’s offer. There also seems to be talk that content from other providers for children will remain ad-free.

Some production companies don’t seem to allow Netflix to place ads in their movies and series, so the company would have to play them before or after the program. In addition, some different licenses are required to show the films and series with advertising, which Netflix does not currently seem to have. The Verge assumes that it will cost 10 to 15 percent of the previous license fees to secure this right, so it is not certain to what extent this model will also make financial sense for the company.

For the realization and implementation of the advertising, Netflix is already working with Microsoft, which already has a lot of experience with advertising in applications. Netflix has already communicated that not all films and series will initially be available for users of this subscription level and that downloads for offline consumption are also not planned.
