Twitch: A lot of advertising for little money – streamers not enthusiastic about the new add-split

Twitch: The fastest growing streamers all speak Spanish

Twitch is luring its affiliate streamers with a new offer: more ads per stream for a slightly larger slice of the advertising revenue pie. Smaller streamers in particular see no advantage in this.

Since the beginning of 2022, those responsible for the live streaming site Twitch.tv have been coming up with new rules to place more advertising in streams. There are now pre-rolls (advertising before the stream), mid-rolls (advertising in the stream) and a mandatory advertising per hour of stream, which the streamer can also play independently.

With gaming streams, for example, it can happen that the most important moment in the game is interrupted by a random advertisement. In the worst case, viewers have to watch nine commercials in a row. The streamers themselves benefit little from it. For small and medium-sized streamers, only cent amounts jump out in the truest sense. And now even more incentives for even more advertisements are to be created for streamers.

At least three minutes of advertising per hour

On August 18, 2022, some affiliate streamers on Twitch received a notification that they could earn a higher share of the ad views. The downside is that they have to run a lot more ads per hour to do so. At the moment there is talk of three minutes of advertising per hour.

This increased share incentive was actually available to some streamers earlier in the year and was announced in June 2022but expanding to affiliates means streamers big and small alike can benefit – although many don’t want to.

A little more advertising revenue, with the risk of scaring viewers away? This is a bad thought, especially for smaller streamers. “Annoy all my viewers and get them to leave my streams for 50 cents extra a month? WHAT A DEAL,” wrote Vtuber kiyomihoshi on Twitter.
