House of the Dragon: Game of Thrones spin-off breaks first record
Few series this year have been so eagerly awaited as House of the Dragon, the first spin-off of the hugely successful Game of Thrones series. The HBO production celebrated its premiere last Sunday and already broke the first records.
Whether you liked the final season of Game of Thrones, found it halfway okay, or thought it was the worst ending in the history of the series, one thing cannot be denied: Game of Thrones was incredibly successful. Across eight episodes, millions of viewers watched the battle between royalty, as well as between humans and white walkers. GoT was the talk of the town, and several moms named their kids after the show’s characters (and, in the case of Khaleesi, probably ended up regretting it).
So it was only a matter of time before the GoT cow continued to be milked and we were presented with various spin-offs. In the meantime, there was talk of up to five different series. With House of the Dragon we now have at least one of these series. In it we see the past of House Targaryen, long before the birth of Daenerys and all the characters we know from Game of Thrones. Nevertheless, there are of course connections, after all, for example, House Stark or Baratheon are also so old that we see the ancestors of Jon Snow or King Robert.
House of the Dragon breaks first record
The premiere of the series now shows how eagerly the fans have been waiting for new stories from Westeros. 9.98 million viewers watched the premiere on Sunday night on HBO or the in-house streaming service HBO Max. No premiere on HBO has ever reached such numbers.
As the broadcaster announced, the number of views of the parent series Game of Thrones has increased rapidly in recent weeks and months, as many wanted to watch GoT again in preparation for House of the Dragon. The numbers are already 50 percent higher than all of July and 90 percent higher than June. So the new series House of the Dragon is doubly worthwhile for the broadcaster.
Incidentally, not only the fans are impressed by the new series. The first episode was also well received by the critics. It radiates the classic GoT feeling and, at least in the pilot episode, does without too many experiments. That can and will certainly change in the coming episodes.
