Lol: Krokodil is having a really bad day at work - "Stop drafting the damn thing"

Over the weekend, the best pros in League of Legends played against each other: the end of the season is approaching and important playoff games are being played in all regions. In early 2022, the crocodile beast Renekton was still a strong choice in top lane. But on August 20th, the crocodile had a really bad day. That could cost him his job in the next few weeks.

What used to be the thing with Renekton?

  • In early 2022, Renekton was a star in LoL. We wrote on MeinMMO in January 2022 that Renekton is so strong that he was banned in every single match in South Korea.
  • Because the champ can do everything: He could stun, gank, refuel and tower dive.
  • At the beginning of 2022, he was considered a really good “blind pick” that you can choose first and that teams can build around.

Balance update hits high damage tanks hard

What has changed? Nothing stays the same for long in League of Legends. Major patches have been made since January, and Riot kept turning the balance of the MOBA.

Because especially “tanks that can deal a lot of damage”, so-called “Brusier”, were a declared thorn in the side of Riot: They didn’t want that anymore:

  • Champions should either do a lot of damage like assassins (Akali, Shaco, Kassadin)
  • or can take a lot, like tanks (Dr. Mundo, Trundle, Aatrox)
  • not both, like Brusier (Renekton, Olaf, Wukong)

Renekton was one of the losers in the big balance update 12.10. The strong crocodile of the past has now temporarily become a “problem crocodile”.

On August 20, Renekton single-handedly loses some important games

That’s the problem with Renekton now: Some professionals had to learn the problem with Renekton bitterly on August 20th. Because once the crocodile has fallen behind the opponent in the top lane, the games can really go against him.

The page Dexerto lists 3 examples of how badly Renekton was beaten up in his top lane on August 20th:

  • In Brazil, Parang lost his lane 0-14 with Renekton. The 26-year-old South Korean refused to direct the hero more defensively, even when everything went against him.
  • In the US, Flyquest played the champ Renekton after top planer Philip gained confidence in Match 1. But with Renekton he then went 0-7-0 and Team Liquid overran FlyQuest in the next 3 games.
  • In Korea, Sandbox took on Gen G. with Renekton and even prioritized the Crocodile. In 3 games, Dove picked the champion. Games 2 and 4 became his personal Waterloo. He went down with the crocodile: Game 2 0-9-0, Game 4 0-4-1.

Draft Expert goes wild at Renekton

Who is particularly upset? Former coach and analyst Nick “LS” de De Cesare is considered a thought leader and mastermind in LoL. His big thing, as a former card game strategist, is the draft: He believes neither coaches nor players have a clue about the draft in LoL. That requires experts like him.

LS is streaming again at the moment, after a short but super exciting appearance as Cloud9’s coach: LS has a problem with Renekton because he sees the champ as a “comfort pick” who is no longer questioned.

This is exactly what LS has experience with, because for years he has railed against a standard item in LoL that everyone saw as “no alternative” – except him.

The meme format is Wil Smith vs. Chris Rock.

Just as Lee Sin has been delivering lousy results as a jungler for a while but still gets picked, LS also sees the champ Renekton.

Therefore, LS was completely stunned on Saturday that the pros kept playing Renekton, even though the crocodile looked so toothless.

LS saw in disbelief that the Korean Dove chose Renekton for the 3rd time – and thus sealed his downfall.

Renekton 0-8-0. Ouch.

When things go bad with Renekton, things go really bad

Why is that at Renekton? Renekton is the case of a champion who looks fantastically strong when things are going according to plan and he’s able to play his game.

But when Renekton falls behind, matches go awry. It’s arguably a lose more champ, when he’s on the losing road he’ll go flat out and race to the finish.

It also just seems to be a pick that many top planers feel comfortable with, albeit greatly uncomfortable.
