At first glance, Kingdom Eighties looks like Stranger Things, but there is much more to it. At Gamescom 2022 we were allowed to add the game.

Cologne – “That looks like Stranger Things! That was the first thing that struck me about Kingdom Eighties. But there’s a lot more to the indie title than meets the eye. The game has nothing to do with Stranger Things, except that both use 80s vibes. We don’t hear anything from Kate Bush in Kingdom Eighties, thank God.

Kingdom Eighties: Alien Invasion ’80s – Packed with retro pop references

80s vibes: The Kingdom series has been around for a long time and the developers have already been able to build up a small fan base with their project. But with Kingdom Eighties, a whole new story appears, detached from the old parts. Of course, there are still mechanics and story parts that refer to the other Kingdom games – in a pixelated 80s look.

The single-player game is developer Gordon Van Dyke’s heart project and is even loosely based on his own biography. Growing up in the Bay Area, near Francisco, he wanted to create a game that captures his youth and favorite movies and series. The story is fictional, inspired by films like “The Goonies” and is intended to take players away from their everyday lives. Just like in “The Goonies” we follow a group of teenagers who have to defeat some kind of aliens and can only survive together.

Kingdom Eighties is a classic 2D sidescroller with 8-bit graphics – just like in the good old days. In the different levels we have to set up camps, hire workers and solve the mystery surrounding the aliens. The game doesn’t make the puzzles too easy for us – a lot of trial and error is required here. Since we don’t attack ourselves, we need our “minions” to protect our camp and ourselves. So Kingdom Eighties also requires a lot of strategy and tactics.

The gameplay and the look of Kingdom Eighties are promising, but the game leaves us with many questions. So the story of the game is not really clear to us yet, but it is probably the linchpin of the game. So we have to wait for more trailers for the game. An exact release date is also not yet known.
