Everywhere: Ex-GTA boss announces a kind of Ready Player One MMO - are there NFTs?

Do you know Leslie Benzies? At least many GTA fans should now say “Yes!” call. After all, the Scot was once President of Rockstar North and the chief developer of the “Grand Theft Auto” series, and that up to GTA V. Leslie Benzies is now working as game director on “Build A Rocket Boy” on a completely different project , which was presented during the opening event of gamescom 2022. It’s called Everywhere and despite a trailer it’s still not clear what kind of game it is.

Everywhere: The Gamescom teaser for the multi-world title

Sort of like a Ready Player One

In the trailer, the developers speak of an open world that is constantly growing, but also of several worlds that are very different from each other. It’s about building a large community, but the term MMO is never mentioned. It’s about players telling their own stories, having fantastic experiences that have never been seen before, and creating a kind of digital representation for themselves.

Sounds pretty cryptic, doesn’t it? Even the FAQ on the official website does not reveal any more: “Everywhere seamlessly blends gameplay, adventure, creativity and discovery in an all-new, multi-world gaming experience that redefines how players connect with each other and the digital world around them.”

The short gameplay scenes in combination with the statements of the developers seem in a way Ready Player One to point out. You probably know Steven Spielberg’s film, which in turn is based on Ernest Cline’s sci-fi novel. It’s about a dystopia in which people take refuge in the virtual metaverse world OASIS. The worlds of the “game” could not be more varied. And also in Everywhere there seems to be fantasy and sci-fi worlds. Racing game and platformer passages. Shooter gameplay. Different graphic styles. How does this all come together? Well, the game is supposed to be released next year.

NFT allegations – what do the devs say?

After the announcement, players have on the Build A Rocket Boy website found three advertised job offers for the blockchain area. So, is this another attempt at crypto metaverse with NFTs? On Reddit the developers gave an answer to this question:

“We see discussions about NFTs/cryptos being sparked by some of our open positions on our site. These are research positions as we don’t want to dismiss new technologies just because others haven’t found a solution for them yet. We build Everywhere but on Unreal Engine 5, not blockchain. We are creating a new world for gamers, where we come together to play, watch, create, share and more! We hope this helps some to clarify the speculation surrounding this topic.”
