Tempest Rising: First impression of the Command & Conquer sequel in spirit
In addition to details about the Gothic Remake, THQ Nordic also had a surprise for our game technology editor Phil at Gamescom, namely the first gameplay for Tempest Rising, a Command & Conquer successor in spirit. He summarized Phil’s first impression with a preliminary technique analysis in this video.
If you take a closer look at the premise of Tempest Rising, you will be reminded of Command & Conquer: After a nuclear war, the world is divided into two powers, the Global Defense Force and the Tempest Dynasty. Both factions are at odds over a mysterious new resource called “Tempest”. In addition, there is said to be a third faction that has been kept secret so far.
Graphically based Tempest Rising (buy now €44.99) on the Unreal Engine 4 and looks accordingly chic. The developers do not experiment with the controls and are guided by the RTS genre standard. The first mission of the GDF campaign, including side missions, was playable at Gamescom. According to the developers, the latter should not represent pure occupational therapy, but offer tangible advantages for mastering the main goals.
Publisher THQ writes about Tempest Rising:
“Tempest Rising combines classic RTS action with modern production and performance. Inspired by the great genre figures of the 1990s and 2000s, Tempest Rising is a classic RTS game set in a modern-day alternate war scenario. It includes 3 unique factions, each with their own approach to combat and economy, and has all sorts of things to offer: a variety of strategies for players of all stripes, maps with neutral structures to challenge, and neutral populations to contend with, in-depth and rewarding gameplay that emphasizes strategy while rewarding skill, and built-in customization options that allow players to approach the game their way in both single-player and multiplayer modes.
