USB4 version 2.0 is coming and should offer up to 80 Gbit/s

A new USB version is coming! It is called USB4 Version 2.0 and is said to enable data transfer rates of up to 80 gigabits per second. The high speeds should also be possible with older USB-C passive cables.

According to the USB Promoter Group, which includes companies like Apple, Microsoft, Intel and HP, the next major update for the USB standard is in the works. USB4 version 2.0 will double the currently possible transfer rate of USB4, which is 40 Gb/s. In addition, updates for the older transmission protocols such as USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, DisplayPort and USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) should also appear.

USB4 Version 2.0 needs new controllers, but not necessarily new cables

In order to be able to use the new USB standard, new USB controllers are required in the devices. However, users do not necessarily have to buy new cables for USB4 Version 2.0: As the USB Promoter Group writes, current USB-C passive cables should also support a transfer rate of 80 Gbit/s.

However, the high speed with the passive cables, which are currently designed for speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, is only possible over short distances. Longer connections require new USB-C active cables to reach 80 Gbps.

USB4 version 2.0 also accelerates older protocols

USB4 version 2.0 is backward compatible with the older standards USB4 version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3. Thanks to the forthcoming protocol updates, even higher bandwidths should be possible with the older standards with USB4 version 2.0 controllers. If, for example, a USB 3.2 signal is transmitted via a USB4 controller (also called “tunneling” in technical jargon), the transmission rate should exceed the currently possible 20 Gbit/s. In addition, USB4 Version 2.0 should also support the current DisplayPort 2.0 and PCIe 5.0.

New USB version will probably come in 2023 at the earliest

The USB Promoter Group has not revealed when USB4 Version 2.0 will appear. Initially, only developers should be able to work with the new standard anyway. First trainings are planned for the USB DevDays in November. The official release of the new USB standard should therefore take place next year at the earliest.
