Assassin’s Creed: Not all future offshoots are gigantic RPGs

Preview Assassin's Creed Mirage: Back to Basics

In recent years, the offshoots of the Assassin’s Creed series have grown into fairly large games. Origins, Odyssey, and also Valhalla all feature a fairly large world, with numerous activities to complete. A game run in which you really want to explore everything can therefore easily break the 100-hour mark.

Shorter Assassin’s Creed spin-offs are on the way

Unlike the older games, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will likely be released at a price of $50, which will also affect the length of the game, according to Assassin’s Creed Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté, in an interview with IGN explains:

“It’s a smaller Assassin’s Creed project. It was conceived and built to celebrate the 15th anniversary. That’s why we’re using our modern Valhalla engine to develop a smaller game that pays tribute to our original game. That’s why we’re focusing We’re more into stealth, melee, parkour, and a denser city that’s going back to our Middle Eastern roots, with Baghdad as the focal point.”

According to the interview, Mirage will have about the same playing time as previous titles in the series, ie 15-20 hours. However, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will not be the only future installment in the series to have a shorter gameplay. With Assassin’s Creed Infinity, Ubisoft wants to create a kind of player hub that combines the worlds and experiences from different Assassin’s Creed parts. The first game of this new platform, currently known as Codename Red, will once again be a large open-world RPG with a Japan setting. However, other future offshoots will follow a different formula.

“I think that Infinity approach also allows us to have different experiences of different sizes. Not everything has to be a 150-hour RPG, right?”

Codename Hexe, the second game announced for Infinity, won’t be an RPG according to Côté, but more information hasn’t been shared yet. Infinity probably allows Ubisoft to develop much more different Assassin’s Creed titles. Games of different lengths should also be priced accordingly.
