Indie tip on Steam: City builder Laysara with more than 100 3D building models

The unusual city builder Laysara: Summit Kingdom is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2023. Now there is information about the 3D buildings.

There is news about the city builder Laysara: Summit Kingdom, which is programmed by two developers and offers interesting gameplay options. In the latest update, the developers talk about the buildings that are of great importance for the game and also look chic thanks to Unreal Engine.

Varied buildings

The developers ask under the blog entry “Behind the Scenes – The Struggle for the Diversity of Houses” introduces the modeling of buildings. There will be more than 100 3D building models in the game, with some buildings having multiple visual variations. This should allow players to build “beautiful and varied” cities that are not filled with “clones”. There are generally only three types of houses, one for citizens of each caste. Houses can be upgraded up to three times, which means four upgrade levels for each house. Also, each house has four visual variations that depend on the environment. While that would mean a lot of 3D models for the developers, it would not give players the feeling that the city is made up of many copied buildings, the developers said.

When the development of Laysara started, it didn’t have all variants by far – there was only one 3D model for each expansion level, even the model for the highest expansion level was missing. The next step was to create prototypes of all the missing variants “to determine the rough geometry and shapes that the models should have so that they fit well together”. In the next step, more details were added so that all variants are at the same quality level. Finally, all house models go through a final fine-tuning pass to add more details and textures, correct or optimize the geometry data and simply make them look more realistic.

Background: Laysara

Unlike other city building games, in Laysara the task is to build a city or settlements in the mountains. The settlements are then supposed to work together symbiotically and establish trade networks that are mutually beneficial. Players can choose between multiple mountains that have individual weather patterns, resource deposits, and layouts. This should create variety and it should be possible to set different priorities for different mountains.
