Splatoon 3 in the test: evolution instead of revolution

The predecessor splatoon 2 could become amazing 13 million times to sell. So it’s by no means a surprise that Nintendo is pushing for a sequel. Instead of big additions to the gameplay, however, we’re more likely to get many improvements in detail – the game concept remains the same colorful blob battles faithful. So we get an all-round improved gaming experience with the exclusive title on the Nintendo switch.

Biggest story mode yet

Even if the “Splatoon” series is better known for its multiplayer battles, part 3 now wants to offer a little more for soloists. So you can in the biggest story mode in the history of the series so far fall and numerous levels with yours color weapons deal with. However, the challenge is limited here, because the story mode sees itself more as an elongated one Tutorialin which you will learn the various weapons and gameplay features.

Unfortunately, at around five hours, the campaign proves to be a bit short of breath, but it is at least a nice pastime and brings you some bonuses such as a larger ink tank or other extras that can also be used in multiplayer battles.

Let’s go into the ink-soaked color battles!

Of the multiplayer is of course the heart of the game and knows how to entertain with many modes. Of course they are again classic 4v4 review battles on board, where you and your team try to cover the arena with more paint than your opponents.

In addition, there are several Anarchy Battle Modesin which you fight for ranks: In domination is about conquering certain zones and in tower command you pursue the goal of pushing a tower in the direction of the opponent’s base. In Operation Goldfish you have to grab the goldfish cannon and carry it into the enemy base and into shell chaos throw as many shells into the basket as you can like a basketball superstar.

You either compete against opponents worldwide or quite simply (via the new walk-in lobby) with your friends. That’s all possible both online and localunfortunately it is not possible to take part in the matches together in split screen.

More modes will follow. The selection of arenas is currently also quite limited. In addition to the current 12 cards (5 of which are brand new), more will be added. It has already been confirmed by Nintendo that “Splatoon 3” many more content updates in the next 2 years learns.

However, one shortcoming remains from the predecessors: Furthermore, only two maps can be played at a time and the arena selection rotates every two hours. Rather, we would have liked a voting system where we then have the choice on which of all existing maps we can play in order to have more variety.

Salmon Run is making a comeback

The popular co-op mode Salmon Run also celebrates its comeback in the latest part. Much to the delight of the fans: What was still a short event in “Splatoon 2” is now available at any time to disposal. Together with friends you defend yourself against waves of computer-controlled salmonids and face them big bosses. What was already a highlight in the predecessor is enriched again in the current offshoot with new moves, arenas and bosses.

Weapons, Clothes, Arenas: More of Everything!

In addition to the new arenas and the new story mode, “Splatoon 3” is characterized above all by many detailed improvements. As a result, “Splatoon 3” has the largest scope of the whole trilogy. So there are tons of new ones on top of that Main, secondary and special weapons.

In the battles, you can choose to attack your opponent with the new Splatana heat up in close combat or dem Stringer bow sow from afar. The Move palette is also expanded, for example with the wall jumpto get an advantage in the color battles.

Everyone is stylish in Splatsville: In matters individualization a lot has happened. Not only do you customize the overall look of your Inkling or Octoling to your liking, you can also unlock a wider range of clothing than ever before in the series to look stylish and, most importantly, take advantage of match bonuses.

Depending on gear your ink tank can be filled faster or you become more resistant to enemy ink bombardment. As a nice gimmick, you can also equip your own locker in the lobby with unlocked decorative items. In the new hub area, the sunburnt one Splatsvilleyou can access all modes and shops.

A new minigame: At least a small new mode has made it into the game, even if it is more likely to be called a mini-game: station decks. A dueling mini-game that works with unlocked in-game trading cards. The cards have different shapes and a bit like Tetris, the aim is to place the cards in such a way that you fill up as large an area as possible.

As in turf wars, the goal is to cover a larger area with your cards than your opponent. While the mini-game is nice, it probably won’t provide more than a few rounds of fun before diving back into the multiplayer modes.

Inky battles with Nintendo charm

Technically, “Splatoon 3” has hardly or not at all developed. The playing fields and matches are still good and colorfully staged. Unfortunately, there are some muddy textures here and there and strong jaggedness, especially in handheld mode.

After all, the “Splatoon” series is not characterized by a realistic look or impressive effects, but wants to do with its colorful style score. As a result, the Nintendo shooter skilfully stands out from other shooters and adds the competitive game mechanics incomparable Nintendo charm added and creates one unique gaming fun experience.

So it’s hardly surprising that the characters can transform into colorful squid to swim through the puddles of paint. If you can get used to the colorful style, you probably won’t be bothered by the incomprehensible chatter of the NPCs. A right voice output there is not any.
