PlayStation VR2 will not be backward compatible with PSVR games

PlayStation VR2 apparently confirms its launch in 2023, GamersRD

Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience, said at the PlayStation Blog Podcast that “PSVR games will not be compatible with PSVR 2 because PSVR 2 is designed to deliver a truly next-generation virtual reality experience.”

“PSVR 2 has much more advanced features, like all new controls with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers and inside-out tracking, eye-tracking on the headset, 3D audio, all combined of course. So this means that developing PSVR 2 requires a completely different approach from the original PSVR.”

There doesn’t seem to be any technical reason why PSVR games can’t be ported to PSVR 2, but the number of developers likely willing to do that work is unknown.

PlayStation VR games that debuted exclusively on the platform, like Moss 2, later moved to other headsets like Meta Quest.

PlayStation VR2 is scheduled to launch in early 2023.
