MontanaBlack on criticism of Twitch streamers by ZDF Magazin Royale: "Everyone is responsible for themselves"

German Twitch streamer Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris was the target of a parody by Jan Böhmermann in ZDF Magazin Royale on September 16. There, Twitch streamers were accused of promoting gambling in the form of loot boxes in games like FIFA 22. In a Twitch stream, he explained how he sees the discussion about loot boxes.

What was ZDF Magazin Royale about?

  • On Friday, September 16th, a current issue of ZDF Magazin Royale dealt with the topic of “in-game purchases” for games like FIFA 22.
  • The satirist Jan Böhmermann commented on his own program in the role of a twitch streamer, which was based on the German streamer MontanaBlack. He would say things like “It tastes good” or shudder when the subject of “taxes” was mentioned.
  • At the end of the video, the moderator Böhmermann insulted the streamer Böhmermann as an “asshole”, who also advertised something like loot boxes.

“I have a clean slate”

Here’s what MontanaBlack said ahead of the broadcast: Even before Friday’s show aired, MontanaBlack was live on Twitch with streamer Trymacs.

Trymacs asked MontanaBlack how he felt that Böhmermann seemed to be parodying him:

  • Trymacs: Is that supposed to be you?
  • MontanaBlack: “Yeah, I assume so. I don’t know. At least – well, definitely, it was a nod to me, too. But I think if it had been a complete thing, you might have another tattoo like that…”

In any case, MontanaBlack looked forward to the performance with ease. He has a clean slate. Casino was the last time he showed it 3.5 years ago. Böhmermann can only open the “e-cigarette” thing, but he only smokes it, he doesn’t have any cigarettes on the market himself.

However, it annoys him when thousands of people ask him what it’s all about and he just doesn’t know himself.

Even though he said he was clean slate, it resonated as if MontanaBlack feared being the scapegoat for casino streams or e-cigarettes. He found this criticism unfair in advance.

The streamer said: He actually likes Böhmermann and could actually be friends with him privately – only this thing a few years ago, when Böhmermann accused his community of being made up of young Nazis, it was a big mistake on his part.

MontanaBlack has video checked by lawyer

This is what he said during the broadcast: While the show was already available in the media library, MontanaBlack was still broadcasting on Twitch. In the midst of it he looked at his phone, read it briefly and then said to Trymacs:

“It’s about in-game purchases. My business partner just wrote to me: It’s all good, it’s about in-game purchases. At the same time, the first person to watch the video was my lawyer. You never know what kind of nonsense they’re going to say. You’re of a size, Digger, where you always have to have lawyers available 24/7.”

“Is content for us”

What does MontanaBlack say about the criticism of streamers in the post? Like Trymacs, MontanaBlack sees little responsibility if viewers really put too much money into loot boxes at FIFA. The streamer says:

You can take any major influencer that plays FIFA or CS:GO or whatever and does case openings and that’s something you can definitely criticize. They are also a max [Trymacs] or I or also the others aware – that it is basically not far from gambling.

But it’s content for us and we’re just hoping that people will realize that we’re people who have more money and we’re blowing it away. And I hope that people are masters of themselves and that in the end everyone is responsible for themselves.

MontanaBlack blames the problem on:

  • 1%EA
  • 4% the streamers
  • and 95% “Father State” that allows it

MontanaBlack says if he were in EA’s place and if loot boxes were legal, he would do it immediately.

MontanaBlack always has problems with “Father State”. In April 2021, for example, he was annoyed by the conditions that threatened him. He toyed with leaving Germany for Malta. There he would have to pay less tax and could indulge in gambling on Twitch again:

MontanaBlack wants to leave Germany: “That’s €400,000 more on my account”
