5 Rework Champions in LoL that used to be very different

5 Rework-Champions in LoL, die früher ganz anders waren

At League of Legends there is always the situation that a champion becomes too strong or has become too weak and then needs to be adjusted and revised. Especially with 5 champions it was particularly drastic. You can find out which 5 these are here on MeinMMO.

League of Legends has continued to evolve over the years. Many of these developments are also based on feedback from the community, others have been seen in e-sports and had to be adapted. LoL is a game that is constantly changing and evolving.

Graphic adjustments are constantly being made, there is a new patch every few weeks and occasionally a new champion is completely overhauled. The last major rework was that of Udyr. Because it was completed so close to Worlds, the champion is not eligible for it.

What makes strong champions even stronger is ultimate ability. The 5 champions in the list have been reworked mainly for their ultimate ability. Udyr is special when it comes to his ultimate ability, as he can use it from level 1. Here you can see more about it:

Poppy – The yordle with the giant hammer

What used to be the champion? Poppy used to be a character who liked to fight 1vs1. With Poppy’s skills, it was easy to attack the enemy under the tower and run away unharmed. Aside from taking out easy targets, she could take all the damage on the front lines without batting an eyelid.

Why did it have to be changed? Poppy’s ultimate had the effect of allowing her to choose an opponent to duel and deal additional damage. Blocked damage from other champions. Also from towers or other opponents. Poppy was thus invincible and could fight through all ranks of opponents.

What can the champion do now? Poppy is the keeper of the hammer. It’s not without reason that she always swings her hammer with her. She twirls the hammer in circles until she smashes the ground, knocking back enemies hit toward their base.

Was it good for the champion? Poppy’s playstyle has changed with this adjustment. She’s still a character who fights in the front ranks, but has become a team fighter rather than a lone fighter. She can use her new ultimate to push away the unimportant targets to clear the way to the easy targets or force outnumbered situations.

Here’s the nostalgia factor from the old Dominion map, where Poppy’s skills are demonstrated:

Sion – The undead Juggernaut is now undead

What used to be the champion? Sion was a fighter before. However, his abilities also left options open as to whether he could be played as a mage or full tank instead of a fighter. That flexibility was a big point when it came to Sion’s playstyle.

Why did it have to be changed? Sion’s Ultimate has given him up to 100% Lifesteal and 50% Attack Speed for 20 seconds. These are stats that allow him to stand in the enemy’s base and be attacked by the Nexus Obelisk as long as he’s attacked anything.

Here you can find a clip about it:

Sion heals against the Nexus Obelisk, killing 5 enemies and surviving

What can the champion do now? Sion’s abilities have been completely reworked and have new effects. His passive ability makes him even more undead. So you can still run across the map for a few seconds after death and attack everything.

Additionally, he’s been given an ultimate ability that is a credit to his backstory and the anger that burns within him. The whole map knows when Sion lashes out and runs furiously halfway across the map.

Was it good for the champion? The champion has now slipped into his role. As a tank on the top plane, he usually contributes to the team on the frontlines of the fight. And even after his death, he remains a thorn in the side of his opponents. Always an ace up the sleeve for every top plane player.

Galio – The grieving guardian becomes a colossus

What used to be the champion? Galio used to be distinguished by its unique ability to be played against mages. This was due to 50% of his magic resist counting as ability power.

Why did it have to be changed? Galio’s ultimate has long been known as one of the most powerful abilities in all of League of Legends. Along with increased resistances, Galio drew the focus of all enemies and after 2 seconds exploded from his petrification, dealing damage to all enemies.

What can the champion do now? With his ultimate ability, Galio can rush to the aid of his teammates, knocking up all enemies around him. With his new skills, Galio manages to help his team in tricky situations and is still able to assert himself very well.

Was it good for the champion? The champion is now in good hands on the mid lane or the top lane. There the colossus comes into its own with its powerful attacks. It’s still played as a response against many mages, but provides more of a supportive playstyle than before the change.

Mordekaiser – The ruler of the souls of the dead

What used to be the champion? Mordekaiser was a champion you could take with you on pretty much any team. He got along great solo and was able to help the team in his own special way. In 1vs1 situations, his skills ensured him longevity and he was able to emerge victorious from battles.

Why did it have to be changed? Mordekaiser’s ultimate ability allowed him to curse his opponent. For 10 seconds they took continuous damage. If Mordekaiser or his team killed the cursed champion in 10 seconds, he would get back up and fight at Mordekaiser’s side.

Yet not enough. Mordekaiser also cursed the dragon, and when his team killed it, his ultimate activated. The dragon then flew after him as a soul and attacked with his normal attacks.

This is what the dragon looked like 7 years ago.

What can the champion do now? Mordekaiser is a champion who plays with the realm of the dead. With his necromantic abilities, he manages for his team to bring the opponents closer and attack them with strong abilities. His ultimate ability drags his opponent into another dimension where they engage in a 1v1 ultimate battle.

Was it good for the champion? Mordekaiser used to have a very iconic ability that, after a successful kill, would pull the balance between teams very strongly, even after they died. Currently, Mordekaiser is flexible on the Rift, engaging in 1v1 battles across the map and with key objectives to give his team an advantage.

Urgot – Killing once was a thing of the past, now it’s execution

What used to be the champion? Urgot used to be a mix of melee and ranged fighters. In addition to this, he was also feared when it came to killing the opponents under their own tower.

Why did it have to be changed? Urgot had the ability to switch places with his opponent and gain resistances. Above all, it was easier to kill the opponent under his tower. In addition, he poisoned opponents and could shoot homing missiles at his opponent, which hit directly.

What can the champion do now? The champion has become a pure melee champion with more range. His Ultimate has been changed to require that he hit an enemy in order to cast it afterwards. Otherwise he has settled in well on the top lane and competes on an equal footing with the other champions.

Was it good for the champion? Before the rework, Urgot had great potential when it came to pulling out single targets. This has changed and he now offers great potential to fight against individual targets or to shine in large team fights.

League of Legends is constantly changing

What else happened: In addition to the changes mentioned, there were other champions that were also adjusted that we haven’t listed in detail yet. Here is just a glimpse of the amount of adjustments:

Here’s a rework for the entire Summoner’s Rift map.

As a result, some abilities had to be visually adjusted, while some of the champions received entirely new abilities that contributed to their current playstyle. Akali’s invisibility has been changed as part of an overall invisibility overhaul. Twitch, Evelynn and Shaco were particularly affected.

Some other champions that have had their ultimate adjusted or mechanics changed include: Valdimir, Irelia, Kayle, Fiora, and Katarina.

Further Champion revisions are planned: In recent years, League of Legends has repeatedly started polls as to which champions are in the process of being revised. In addition, there are always requests or ideas from the LoL team that want to make minor adjustments.

Announced changes so far have been voted for Neeko, Syndra, Aurelion Sol, Ahri, and after a poll earlier in the year, Skarner. Above all, Skarner is supposed to be the next big project after Udyr.

You can read what MeinMMO author Mark Sellner thinks about it here: For 5 years, LoL couldn’t lure me with new champions – I’ll play again immediately for the “new” Udyr
