This content would not be financially viable without the premium users. But we urgently need more supporters: You can help too!

In our grade comparison for Return to Monkey Island we list tests, reviews, ratings or whatever from the following German online game magazines – regardless of the fact that some of them also publish print offers (aka booklets): Computer Bild Spiele, GameStar.de (& GamePro.de) GIGA .de, PCGames.de (& Videogameszone.de), Spieletipps.de and, of course, GamersGlobal.de – whereby we politely place ourselves at the end of the review list. What is important to us: A rating can only be a rough description of the game quality – please read the respective test report before commenting on a rating that might be out of the ordinary. The magazines Gameswelt.de and Eurogamer.de no longer appear since they decided to no longer write a rating under their tests.

Charming, funny journey through time with many well-known locations and characters. Fair puzzles, too easy for professionals. (Full test behind paywall)

I’m so happy to be able to tell you today that Return to Monkey Island not only follows on from its predecessor in a fantastic way, you’ll also receive the usual hilarious love letter dripping with nostalgia, which made me as a fan overjoyed – and by who ended up with a few tears of joy rolling down his cheeks.

Is Return to Monkey Island the long-awaited comeback that will bring the series back to its former glory? I say no. For me it’s just what the developers had promised in advance: An absolutely likeable, classic point-and-click adventure that reflects on old virtues, but doesn’t get stuck in the past.

I’m not totally enthusiastic, but I’m satisfied with the result, which is certainly not a sure-fire success. For me, the puzzle design is one of the best that the genre has achieved in the last ten years. The English voice output and the music are strong, even if some of the gags don’t really catch fire for me. One can argue about the graphic style. Personally, I don’t experience it as a disruptive factor, and in the meantime I actually like it quite a bit overall.

average rating 8.4 *Last checked: 09/19/2022, 18:20

We calculate the average rating based on the 10 system, so a “75” corresponds to a 7.5. Of course, the rating systems and philosophies differ in detail. If a magazine awards different ratings or grades depending on the platform, we use the highest for the average. If in the meantime a test has appeared in a magazine that is marked as “Not tested” here, we would be happy if the rating and link were mentioned as a comment.
