Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II beta is now available on Xbox and PC

It has been amazing for Activision and Infinity Ward to see so many players participating during the first weekend of the Multiplayer Beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II on Sony platforms, with many more expected to join for the second weekend which is now available on all platforms.

There has already been a lot of feedback on Reddit and social media, as well as a ton of stats collected from the Infinity Ward side. In addition to the new maps and modes that have been prepared for the second weekend, there are also some changes (and new things that the studio is testing) that will be shared with players this week. Over the first weekend, Infinity Ward played the game, watched the game play, read player feedback, and talked to many in the community.

As a priority, for the second weekend we will:

  • Fixed several crashes
  • Addressed some vulnerabilities in the game
  • Fixed some lighting and geolocation issues on the map
  • Updated the progression for some Armory related bugs

Here are some things heard from the community:

Minimap Point Rules

  • Currently in the Beta version of Modern Warfare 2, only enemy player points are displayed when a UAV is active. The design reason for this is that we don’t want to punish players for firing their weapons. Players are also intended to actively seek out the origin of a shot rather than simply traveling directly to where the point is on the minimap. Feedback will continue to be collected on how the game is playing regarding this topic.

  • There are comments that it is difficult to track targets once you get involved in a firefight. Infinity Ward agrees that this is an issue and that there are changes to reduce muzzle smoke opacity and increase muzzle flash visibility to help attack someone who is shooting at you. These changes should help you track your opponents in combat.
  • The studio is also investigating more ways to visually differentiate enemies and allies outside of the standard dog tags on opposing players’ heads. Will test some changes in the second weekend.

User interface

  • Feedback has been seen about difficulty editing Perk Packs, managing loadouts, and accessing the Arsenal. Some UX issues were also identified, as well as some bugs; these are things that won’t be able to be adjusted in time during the second Beta weekend, but they are the most important things before launch.


  • Mixed feedback was seen on the perk pack system. Some players love it and others feel it’s an unnecessary departure from the original system. Infinity Ward thinks this is a nice change to how perks work and the overall progression of a match. Ultimate perks have also been balanced to become more powerful as you earn them later in the game. They will continue to be tested throughout the second Beta weekend, including drastically speeding up their win rate to see how players react. The goal is still to improve the flow of all perks before launch.
  • Dead Silence is another hot topic, as many players have expressed that they would like to see it as a perk rather than a field buff. The study considers that it is important for the health of the game that the runners cannot move at high speeds without consequences. Dead Silence as a field upgrade strikes a balance between freedom of movement and combat predictability.


  • Footstep audio in the first week of the Multiplayer Beta was very loud, giving players long-distance directional information on enemies. For weekend two, some changes arrive. Footstep audio range for different player motion states (trot, sprint, and tactical sprint) is being reduced. This will help smooth out the cost of moving around the map. The second change is that now the steps of friends and enemies are different. This should help players better understand what’s going on as things move on the battlefield.

  • Sentiment around the removal of slippage cancellation remains positive. The studio is aware of the fix and is contemplating how to handle it during the second Beta weekend. In addition, it has other slide changes for the release that will make this move feel a bit more fluid and snappy.

Dates of the second weekend of the Beta

The second Beta Weekend is available on all console and PC platforms, from the Thursday, September 22 at 10 a.m. PT until the Monday September 26. Crossplay (1) will be active, allowing the entire community to have fun together, no matter what hardware they play on.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: It doesn’t matter if you pre-ordered the game or not, Weekend Two is a free open beta for all PlayStation 4 and 5 owners.

Xbox and PC Early Access: Those who pre-ordered the game for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or pre-purchased it for PC through Blizzard or Steam, can start playing the Beta on Thursday, September 22 at 10 a.m. PT. Xbox Live Gold is required for Xbox players, and PC players must have a or Steam account.

Xbox and PC Open Beta: The rest of the weekend, from the Saturday, September 24 at 10 a.m. PT until the monday september 26will be available to Xbox and PC players regardless of preorder status.
