Following new impressions and multi-media gameplay, Ubisoft has released a new gameplay trailer for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. It shows us what’s new in the strategy RPG, which eliminates the grid in combat and offers a more expansive exploration.

As players venture to different planets with Mario, Peach, Luigi, and the Rabbids, they will encounter new challenges and heroes like Rabbid Rosalina and Edge. Using each hero’s unique abilities is important to succeed in battle. For example, Steely Stare and Hero Sight work like Overwatch by XCOMshooting at the first enemy that enters your line of sight.

Rabbid Peach and Edge can also attack around cover, great for finishing off enemies. Rabbid Mario is a strong melee fighter with devastating counter punches. Even better, as he levels up, he gains more distance on his hits. As for Peach, he can provide damage immunity to allies, which is useful for avoiding damage spikes or being aggressive towards enemies.

Players can change their abilities and switch teams at any time. Each hero also has a skill tree to upgrade for more health, critical hit damage, etc. As for the Sparks, which provide elemental damage and resistances to each character, they are leveled by feeding them Star Bits earned from defeated enemies.

In addition to encountering enemies on the field, players can also challenge them in Darkmess, which appears as puddles of tar throughout the area. Since the battlefield layouts are separate from the world, they are now more imaginative and can be rearranged to offer different enemies, obstacles, and hazards.
