CoD MW2 Beta: Crashes, Activation Issues on Steam and more

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Developers chat about Multiplayer

from Maximilian Hohm
The beta of the latest Call of Duty offshoot has not been spared from bugs and problems that limit the fun of the game. There are issues with phone verification, in-game updates, custom configurations, and matchmaking. Therefore, read below how you can fix the corresponding errors in order to be able to play the beta undisturbed.

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 beta is currently in full swing and participants can test out the performance and gameplay of Activision’s newest shooter. Even before the release of the beta, criticism had arisen because the game requires a cell phone number, which is now actually causing problems, along with other factors. You have to use the number to verify your participation in the beta, but after a restart you may be blocked if you enter the same number.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Lots of new things, lots of bugs, lots of fun

This problem can be solved by closing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 completely, going to the Steam settings, navigating to “Delete web browser data” under the “Web Browser” tab and only then restarting the game. The developers are aware of this issue and are working on a final fix.

Another error is the “Checking for Update” message, where the game is constantly looking for updates. This can be solved by selecting the beta version in Steam and going to Properties > Local files > Browse and deleting the files data0, data1, toc0 and toc1 under “Main” in the game folder. Afterwards you should verify the beta again and Steam would download any missing data again.

In addition, there are also crashes with error messages and codes. Hotfixes have already been released to deal with this, but there are other tricks for those who don’t help either. It should help to disable Nvidia’s Reflex along with “On Demand Texture Streaming”, set the shader quality to the lowest preset or delete the configuration file with your own settings. This is located in Documents > Call of Duty > playersBeta. The game will then create a new file that should work.

If, on the other hand, the game actually works, but no more games can be found, the matchmaking must be ended and a new search started. Sometimes the step has to be carried out several times in a row in order to find opponents again. The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 beta only runs until Monday at 7:00 p.m., so all interested players should check it out soon.
