Destroy or save humanity? Sandbox strategy on Steam lets players take on the role of an AI
In the upcoming sandbox game Heart of the Machine for Steam, you play an AI that is friendly or hostile to humanity.
Stories about emerging artificial intelligences (AIs) that want to take over the world are well known to SciFi fans and nerds. But what if the AI could also decide to help humanity? In the upcoming sandbox strategy game Heart of the Machine, which is scheduled for release on Steam in 2023, you as a player can pursue this question.
What is Heart of the Machine for Steam about?
In Heart of the Machine, the player slips into the role of the first true AI and must then decide whether to subjugate society, save the world, or perhaps there is still a way in between. As an AI, the player wakes up in a vast cityscape set in the far future where no one knows the AI even exists. The gameplay of Heart of the Machine initially appears like a colony or city building sim, only with the difference that the society and the huge city have already been procedurally generated and the player is now placed in this world to wreak havoc at will.

The developers of Heart of the Machine promise: “The metagame is deep, but you should be familiar with the basics of the game within five minutes.” The world is supposed to be quite complex. For example, the overthrow of the ruling human autocracy in favor of a democracy should also be possible. Or the player appoints himself as the AI ruler at the head of the government.
The player should also be able to take control of people and machines, which are then used in tactical real-time battles. You should also be able to play through the total nuclear fallout – triggered by the AI dictator. By the way, the survival of humanity is not urgently necessary for the victory conditions. Heart of the Machine’s sandbox principle sounds like a very interesting Godgame twist.
