Is Elden Ring 2 Coming? Why there is much to be said for a sequel

There is much to be said for a continuation of the new IP.

FromSoftware’s massive open world Souls just came out in February. No Elden Ring 2 will be announced in the near future. However, it is quite likely that there will be a sequel. We explain why and also name possible concerns.

What speaks for Elden Ring getting a second part is actually obvious: the groundbreaking success of the new IP. The sales in the first month broke all expectations of the Kadokawa Group, which is the parent company behind FromSoftware. 13.4 million copies were sold up to March 31 alone, a good month after the release. Colleague Dennis dedicated a column to the topic and gave some comparative values.

There is a very clear reason for the great success of Elden Rings: The game is more accessible and beginner-friendly than previous FromSoftware titles and has attracted many new players to the world of Souls gaming. And it is precisely this achievement that makes it unlikely that the development team, or publisher Bandai Namco, will try to build on the success.

Elden Ring vs Dark Souls – Why is the new game so much more successful?

Bandai Namco also has them Trademark Rights to Elden Ring. Incidentally, in this case it is almost impossible for the publisher to have the game developed by another studio. After all, FromSoftware founded an entire genre with the Souls series and has an excellent reputation. The remake of the first Souls title Demon’s Souls was developed by Bluepoint (under publisher Sony), but the original gameplay remained untouched.

Only Dark Souls and Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki could give reason for doubtswhich is known for not being too repetitive and instead always tackling something new – such as 2015’s Bloodborne or 2018’s Sekiro, neither of which have received a sequel so far.

So, while the last two games were Sekiro and Elden Ring and not another Dark Souls, the developer has no general aversion to sequels.
