Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 now has a month to implement the beta feedback. But a deadly sin remains in the finished game, leaks reveal.

Santa Monica, USA – The Modern Warfare 2 beta has ended successfully. Players were allowed to test the new Call of Duty for two weeks prior to release. October 28th is now time to polish the game – a long month for players, but little time for developer Infinity Ward. An insider revealed today that one major criticism, the bulkiness, is intentional, but there’s a reason for it.

Modern Warfare 2: Expert explains why the new CoD controls like a clumsy mobile game

CoD players grumble about this: The big open beta for the new Call of Duty ended on September 26th. Even if Modern Warfare 2 inspired thousands, there was still criticism, justified criticism. We have already listed the seven deadly sins of the CoD beta.

Now developer Infinity Ward has one month to implement the feedback and give CoD the final touches before release. But one painful feature will probably not change anymore: the menus, the user interface. The players really complain about it.

Why are menus “awful”? Modern Warfare 2 plays fluidly in the new CoD multiplayer, but anything that isn’t direct combat is more of a spasm than fluid. Here is a summary:

  • The menus are unnecessarily nested, you have to constantly navigate between the individual sub-items, there are many large areas next to each other.
  • The navigation is not intuitive. Here to the right, you can only get there in matchmaking and an extra button opens a menu there.
  • Critics say the menus weren’t designed for controller users.
  • But even with the mouse it’s not fun to configure weapon setups, unlock attachments or tune your settings.
  • Players complain that the menus feel like a smartphone app or streaming service, but not like a modern video game.

User interface feedback ranges from “horrible” to “unplayable” on Twitter. However, many players are hoping that Infinity Ward will patch Modern Warfare 2’s menus vigorously. Unfortunately, the opposite seems to be happening.

CoD Modern Warfare 2: Insider reveals the deadly sin of the beta is “not a test”, but “final”

Therefore the criticism does not change: However, the hated new “Call of Duty” menus are no coincidence. William Faler, the new UI/UX Director from the MW2 developer, who is mainly responsible for the menus and navigation, had a completely different experience before. Faler used to work for Hulu, a streaming service. Fans also found out that several former app and streaming developers now work at Activision for Call of Duty (via Twitter).

The reliable leaker and insider RalphsValve revealed today, September 27, that the design of the UI of Modern Warfare 2 will not change:

The insider says the beta menus “no draft” would be, but “final“ would be. If anything, players should expect minimal changes to the UI in the finished CoD MW2. The leaker also gives the reason for this.

Are “evil” smartphones to blame? Players directly suspect the mobile games hated by core gamers, which are now having a negative impact on the usability of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Leaker RalphsValve also refers to it and says that the new UI should be compatible with Warzone Mobile.

Somewhat after the major releases of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2, the Warzone Mobile smartphone release will be released in 2023. All three games share progression and are meant to be intertwined. The fact that you need an interlocking interface for this makes sense – only the players don’t like the solution at all. Call of Duty has not learned from another mistake that has already been committed in the past.
